Assam bleeds before Assembly polls; 8 BSF jawans killed, 5 Congress men injured

Assam bleeds again. Bombs and bullets threatens to bury the hope of peace in the poll bound state. After a brief silence, the anti-talk faction of NDFB and ULFA roared again. Eight BSF personnel were killed and 5 Congress men have been injured in two seperate strike by the banned insurgent outfit on Monday.


At least eight BSF personnel were killed and the same number injured on Monday in an ambush by the anti-talk faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland in Kokrajhar district. Th e Bodo outfit used automatic weapons to ambush the convoy of the BSF in remote Ultapani forest area near the Indo-Bhutan border.


The BSF jawans were killed on the spot, five others succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. Some of the eight injured jawans were rushed to the Hospital at Bongaigaon, while others were taken to Kokrajhar civil hospital for treatment. The deceased have been identified as Bijoy Kumar, S K Sharma, Arabinda Dere, Bolaram Lamba, Santa Ramthree, Naresh Kumar, Kuber Bora and Hira Singh.


A combing operation have been launched by the security forces, including the Army along the Indo-Bhutan border, to nab the culprits. The patrol was on way from Bangladoba in Chirang district of Assam to Ultapani in Kokrajhar when it was ambushed.


Hours after this attack, ULFA lobbed a powerful EID at the Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati leaving 5 perosns injured. The incident took place at around 6-55 in the evening with a huge sound when party spokesman Mehdi Alom Bora was sitting at his chamber. Kalyan Gogoi, Akhsyay Rajkhowa and Ranjan Bora were also left injured in the blast. Mehdi Alom Bora’s condition is critical who is undergoing treatment at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital.


Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who arrived in Guwahati from Delhi rushed to the GMCH immediately after the incident and visited the injured persons. Gogoi also visited the incident spot and instructed the district administration to firmly deal with the situation. Several other political parties also have criticized the banned insurgent outfit for the blast.


Meanwhile, ULFA has claimed the responsibilities of the blast and threatened to continue these attack. In an e-mail statement sent to media, Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah said that this attach is simply a message to Congress. The blast took place a day after the ruling party announced the names of 118 candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls.


It may be noted that ULFA threatened to target the Congress parties in rank and file for splitting the outfit. But the government downplayed the threat.

Hazarika’s effigy burnt

Asom Yuva Parishad activists burnt the effigy of Padma Hazarika alleging his intentional mistake in the voting exercise in the Rajya Sabha polls on Friday.Several AYP activists thronged the AGP headquarters in the evening after the announcement of the poll results. Before that it was confirmed that the ballot paper was cancelled.Some other party activities shouted slogans demanding expulsion of the Sotea MLA alleging his intentional mistake in the ballot paper.

No politics further: Hussain

Opposition consensus candidate Haidor Hussain said that he would further refrain from active political party.After his defeat in the Rajya Sabha polls on Friday, he told reporters in Dispur that his defeat was on the expected line in view of the gradual erosion of unity among the Opposition parties.But he said he agreed to give his consent to the proposal in view of overwhelming support from across the state. He had to remain satisfied with only 26 votes.

AGP suspends Hazarika

The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad has suspended Padma Hazarika for 6 years alleging his intentional mistake in the voting in the Rajya Sabha polls.The decision was taken at the party’s steering committee meeting after the announcement of the poll results.Senior party leaders agreed that the mistake was intentional which was why, his vote was cancelled giving a big blow to the prospect of the Opposition consensus candidate Haidor Hussain.  

BJP votes found intact!

Amid controversy over Prasanta Phukan’s vote, BJP leadership has claimed that not even a single vote of the party legislators have been found invalid.According state unit president Sarbananda Sonowal, all BJP votes were valid and that the question of secret understanding does not arise.Phukan also claimed to have done nothing wrong while he was casting his vote favouring the Opposition consensus vote in the Rajya Sabha polls on Friday.

I am happy: Gogoi

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that he was the happiest of all in the Congress to have ensured the victory of the two ruling party candidates apart from the BPF candidate in the Rajya Sabha polls.Talking to reporters after the announcement of the poll results in Dispur, Gogoi criticized the Opposition unity saying that an unholy alliance does not last long.

I will work for Assam: Sinh

After his victory in the Rajya Sabha polls on Friday, Dr Sanjay Singh said that he was never an outsider and that he would always think of the people of Assam in his mind.He told reporters that he would raise his voice on behalf of Assam and the Assamese in Parliament. Dr Sinh and his wife arrived in Guwahati when polling was going on.

Cong celebrates victory

Assam Congress is upbeat with the Rajya Sabha poll results after it was formally announced on Friday evening.Hundreds of Congress activists thronged the Rajiv Bhawan and started bursting fire crackers to celebrate the victory.
