International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.
On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Few eminent social workers felicitated on this occasion were Nagaon Zila Mahila Congress Committee president Mrs. Eliza Ahmed, District Social Welfare Officer Ms. Moni Deepa Saikia and senior advocate and former lecturer of Nagaon Law College Mrs. Deepa Saikia.

At least 3 people died and twenty others have sustained injury when a powerful blast rocked the Guwahati-B’lore Express in Chennai on Thursday.The explosion took place at the Chennai Central Station at the No 9 platform immediately after the Guwahati-B’lore Express train arrived en route to Guwahati there at 7.10 in the morning.All injured have been rushed to the hospital. Forest guards in Kaziranga National Park had a heavy exchange of firing with poachers hours after a female rhino was killed on Wednesday.The encounter took place near the Rangolu forest in Burhapahar range in the morning hours after forest guards spotted the hornless rhino carcass atop the Kukurakata Hill.The heavy gunbattle lasted for nearly 2 hours. But there is no report of any casualty as the poachers were believed to fled from the spot. With this, poachers have killed 16 rhinos in the world heritage site during this last four months.

A hawker in Guwahati lost his life after he was ran over by a speeding bus in the city on Wednesday.The tragic incident took place at Christianbasti area when a Tezpur bound passenger bus rammed into the bicycle born hawker where he died on the spot. He was identified as Ajit Medhi of Hengrabari area in the city.Bhangagarh police have arrested the driver and his assistant in this connection.Eyewitnesses told Assam Times that the driver and his assistant took 5 minutes to halt the bus after the hawker was crushed under it.
A lower court in Silchar has remanded Jakie Zakir to 14 days judicial custody a day after the husband of Borkhola MLA was arrested on charge of domestic violence.Zakir, who married Nath last year was produced before the Silchar Chief Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday evening where he was sent to jail.He was arrested on Monday after his MLA wife lodged a complaint of physical and mental torture on her for the last couple of months.

In yet another huge achievement, police have captured a notorious ganja smuggler from Guwahati on Monday.Identified as Lalon Shah, he was arrested during a raid at his residence in Beltola on Monday night. Acting on a tip off, a CID team on Monday night conducted a raid at a building he recently got built in Beltola and managed to arrest the smuggler.The CID sleuths further have seized a huge quantity of ganji weighing 400 kg ganja from his residence.
