International Women’s Day observed at Rangaloo

International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.


On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Few eminent social workers felicitated on this occasion were Nagaon Zila Mahila Congress Committee president Mrs. Eliza Ahmed, District Social Welfare Officer Ms. Moni Deepa Saikia and senior advocate and former lecturer of Nagaon Law College Mrs. Deepa Saikia.


More than three hundred women participants were gathered in a slide presentation based on International Women’s Day celebration theme of the year 2011, ‘Equal access to Education, training and science and technology, pathway to decent work place for women’ Md. Mritunjoy 108 workers took part in the open session and spoke about the first aid- precautionary measures to be taken at emergency.

Men-elephant conflict refuses to die down in Assam. After a brief lull, two women lost their lives in two different incidents of attack on men on Thursday.The first incident took place in Guwahati where a hard of wild elephants trampled to death a 50 year old women after damaging her house.The shocking incident took place at Botahghuli area in the city in the wee hours were the elephants suddenly barged into a hut and damaged it after trampling to death a woman who was identified as Phuljan Bibi.In yet another incident on the same hour, wild elephants killed a 65 year old woman at Kothiatoli in Nagaon district.
A truck driver sustained serious injury when his vehicle rammed into a train in Tinsukia on Wednesday.The incident took place at Panitola in the midnight when the speeding truck rammed into the Tinsukia-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express after the driver lost his control.The seriously injured driver was sent to the Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh.Three coaches of the luxurious train were damaged in the incident and a few passengers sustained minor injury.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi reviewed the state’s law and order at a high level meeting with Chief Secretary and DGP at Koinadhora in Guwahati on Wednesday.Hours after his BTAD visit, Gogoi talked to chief secretary JS Khosla and DGP Khagen Sarma asking them to be prepared to face any eventuality in BTAD areas after May 16.He further asked the top police officials to keep a close watch on the day to day happenings in the trouble torn BTAD areas where violence is likely to recur May 16.
RASHMITA GOGOI FROM NEW DELHI: The BTAD bloodbath seems to have  erupted anger and protest in New Delhi. Hundreds of students staged dharna in front of the Assam House on Wednesday in protest against the bloodletting in BTAD.Holding play cards and banners, the students from JNU and Delhi University thronged in front of Assam Hose and shouted slogans demanding measures to contain the situation.Further, they demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrators in the carnage where over 50 people were killed and 2000 rendered homeless. 
Repolling has passed off peacefully in three booths in Karimganj on Wednesday. The turn out was moderate possibly because of the incessant rains that lashed the entire area from the morning.Initially, the polling booths had no crowds. The numbers of voters increased towards the noon. A low intensify explosion seems to have created no less panic in Dhubri on Wednesday.The explosion took place at Bauskata in Fakirganj area in front of a businessman. Identified as Abdul Jawar who received an extortion notice from unidentified miscreants 20 days back.There is no report of any casualty. But panic gripped the local residents who confined to their houses for several hours.The bomb was believed to have lobbed at Jawar’s residence which missed the target and exploded with a huge sound in front of the gate. Over 50 school goers managed to escape tragic death in Guwahati when a bus carrying the students caught fire on Wednesday.The incident took place at Nineth Mile area in Guwahati where a city bus carrying at least 50 students was on its way to the CRPF Kendriya Vidyalaya.The bus driver and his assistant noticed smoke bellowing from the engine and stopped the bus at a stone’s throw distance from the school. Local residents in large number came out to their rescue.They helped the students get down from the bus quickly. Fire extinguishers were deployed inside the bus and thus the situation was brought under control.
