International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.
On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Few eminent social workers felicitated on this occasion were Nagaon Zila Mahila Congress Committee president Mrs. Eliza Ahmed, District Social Welfare Officer Ms. Moni Deepa Saikia and senior advocate and former lecturer of Nagaon Law College Mrs. Deepa Saikia.

Parts of the upper Assam districts have come under flood after the waterlevels of the Brahmaputra and its tributeries rose following the incessant rains that lashed the catchment areas during the last couple of days. Some vital roads in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Dibrugarh districts have come under the surging waters damaging crops in the paddy fields. The situation could turn grave as the water levels of these rivers have been rising alarmingly.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday left it on party high command to decide on his fate as chief minister. Talking to reporters after his meeting with Mallikarjun Kharge in the morning, Gogoi said that he had hardly any idea of his top job and that party high command would take the final call. His statement assumes significance a day after the dissidant ministers and MLAs formaly demanded removal of Gogoi as chief minister. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has been leading the camp on Monday night submitted a letter to the high commamd raising a few allegations against Gogoi.
Atleast 15 people had a narrow escape when the houses they lived in were collapsed in landslide in Guwahati on Tuesday. The incident took place in the wee hours at Jyotinagar near Bamunimoidam when a wall slipped into their houses. The family members managed to escape the tragedy.

AICC leader Mallikarjun Kharge took stock of the voice of growing resentment within the party ministers and MLAs in Guwahati on Monday. Kharge, who is on a stock taking visit to Guwahati asked the legislators to ensure victory in the 2016 assembly polls. Suspected NDFB militants are believed to have kidnapped an engineer from Andhra Pradesh Haflong last week. Sources have confirmed a demand of Rs. 6 crore ransom for the release forcing police to launch a combing operation in the entire district. Identified as Nagamalleswara Rao, a native of the Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, is employed with a private firm in Assam. According to police, he was abducted on June 16 as he was working as the manager of a stone crusher unit. The reason for abduction is extortion. Around five suspected militants entered the stone crushing unit at Kalachand, about 60 kilometres from Haflong and kidnapped the 36-year-old manager.

AICC leader Mallikarjun Kharge is on a visit to Guwahati on Monday to lead a protest over the move to hike the train fares. According to AICC sources, Kharge who was the railway minister in the UPA government would take on the Modi government for the proposed hike in the passenger and freight rates. Notably, initially the Modi government proposed to hike the rail fares citing a pending proposal during the UPA government. But Kharge made it plain that the entire proposal was left to the next government.
