International Women’s Day was observed at Gram Vikash Parishad’s Head Office, Rangaloo jointly by Jan Sikshan Sansthan, Nagaon, Gram Vikash Parishad and Social Welfare Department of Nagaon on 8th March 2011. To mark this auspicious occasion a day long programme was held. Officers from different departments of the district and well known persons were present in the open session presided over by Md. Siraj Uddin Ahmed General Secretary of Gram Vikas Parishad. Valuable speeches were delivered by the eminent guest speakers including Mrs Jarjina Begum (Retired Subject Teacher), Moni Deepa Saikia (District Social Welfare Officer), Rosie Kalita (Additional S.P. Nagaon), Dr. Roslin Zahan (Professor Nagaon Girls College), Based Ali (Asstt. Teacher Rangoloo High School), Abdul Munnaf (President, Gram Vikas Parishad), Rumi Begum (Senior Supervisor Kathiatali ICDS Project), emphasizing over the main objective of observing Women’s Day, women empowerment and awareness.
On this occasion tree plantation, devotional song, drawing competition and a one act play performed by JSS & GVP staff written and directed by Kajol Choudhury were one of the important parts of the day long programme including open session. Japanese Encephalitis continues to wreak havoc in the state where the death toll has gone up to 52. Barpeta district remains worst affected after the death toll has gone up to eight apart from the rise in then number of confirmed positive cases which stands at 54. Barpeta is followed by the rural Kamrup district with 34 cases. Four patients died. Darrang, Sivasagar and Nalbari have all registered six deaths. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is preparing to accept Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma’s resignation a day after the education and health minister quitted the cabinet. Reliable sources told Assam Times that the chief minister has sent the copy of Dr Sarma’s resignation letter to AICC conveying his decision to accept it. Dr Sarma put in his papers on Monday saying that he was not prepared to work under Tarun Gogoi as chief minister.
The dissident ministers and MLAs are running the risk of stern action from the party high command. State Congress committee on Monday has urged the AICC to take stern action against outgoing education and health minister alleging anti party activities. APCC along with 13 ministers have jointly urged the party leadership to take action against the dissident MLAs and ministers who accompanied Dr Sarma in his journey to the Raj Bhawan. A section of senior leaders is believed to have taken the side f Tarun Gogoi as chief minister who is set to meet the dissident ministers and ministers on Monday evening. A Naga miscreant was killed in a heavy exchange of fire in Doldoli Reserve Forest in Karbi Anglong district along the Assam-Nagaland border during an anti-encroachment drive on Monday. According to information, the incident took place when gunmen from across the border fired upon security personnel and workers engaged in the eviction operation forcing the police to retaliate where the miscreant was killed. Outgoing health and education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma makes it plain and simple that he would continue to oppose Tarun Gogoi as chief minister as long as he stays. Immediately after sending his resignation letter on Monday, Dr Sarma who has been leading the dissident group said that he has 50 legislators behind him and if need be, he would name them.
