The chairman of the DHD(J), Jewel Garlosa and commander in chief, Niranjan Hojai could not be examined so far due to various legal hurdles. With the end of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) ‘honeymoon’ after two years, a lot of changes are going to take place in Assam’s political circle. During last Lok Sabha elections BJP and AGP came together to defeat Congress party, in which BJP played the role of big brother and there was an understanding that in the Assembly elections of 2011, the AGP would be the big brother and BJP would support the alliance candidates. Since the results of Lok Sabha elections were disappointing for the BJP-AGP alliance, a sign of mistrust prevailed in the minds of both parties’ leadership. There was a feeling among the minds of AGP leaders that most of...
The observation of Chief Justice, S H Kapadia of Supreme Court of India, during his recent visit to Assam and Meghalaya, vindicates high level corruption in administration and allegations brought out by various Non- Government Organizations(NGOs), including the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) led by Akhil Gogoi, against the Assam government’s various departments based upon the information received under the Rights to Information (RTI) Act,2005, to be true. Recent developments and tug-of-war between Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), an organization of farmers, led by its General Secretary, Akhil Gogoi and the ruling Congress party in Assam, over the issue of mega dam construction by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) on River Subansiri in Gerukamukh, has indicated that the bureaucrats in the state are working under heavy political pressure. It was seen on the 15th July last, when a rally organized by KMSS and led by veteran environmentalist, Medha Patkar and Akhil Gogoi sought permission to march for the capital complex to raise their demand for undoing the construction of the dam. They were not permitted to move beyond the...
For more than two months the Assam government is puzzled over two TADA case diaries missing from Pan Bazar and Chandmari police stations of Guwahati. Now the case has been entrusted to the state CID for investigation, but it is not yet clear how the mystery could be solved. In the beginning Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) General Secretary Akhil Gogoi was targeted and now the decision has been taken to interrogate the former DIG Asim Roy under whose custody it is believed that the files were kept nineteen years ago. It is an interesting evidence of the functioning of the state government, which has come out of slumber after a long span of time.. It was a tug of war between the...
