Shillong Autumn Festival concludes
The Shillong Autumn festival came to an end after a stupendous celebration over two days in which the colour of northeast was in full display. There were several surprises too for the visitors, including the magnificent fire display by artistes from UK and Russia and the majestic canvas painting by eminent and fine artists from all over the North Eastern States.
The community Art Workshop was conducted by MTDF member and artist, Raphael Warjri, Rembrandt I Kharnaior, Benedict Skhemlang Hynniewta and Thomas Mylliemumlong of Meghalaya, Panger Onen and Lima Aonok of Nagaland, Henba Temsuba and Imobi Sharma of Manipur, Noni Borpujari, Kishore Kumar Das and Shyamalee Chaliha of Assam, Muran Mog and Devdas Debbarma of Tripura and Ms C Laltanpui and Sapkaikailiana of Mizoram. The artists painted together in a huge canvas which was later auctioned at Rs two lakh.
The local boat racing and archery competition too enhanced the atmosphere. The harmony of folk songs and contemporary music, the rhythm of folk and modern dances with the fashion display of ethnic costumes in up to date trend fascinated every visitor.
Although there is a blend of local and overseas performances; the first day displayed more on the local ambience and the second day it showcased the diverse cultures of the North Eastern Region of India. The music bands comprise of Alive from Sikkim and the local bands Afflatus, Street Stories and Somersault from Shillong enthralled the audience. The fashion show was choreographed and presented by Daniel Syiem, a local fashion designer who also made a mark at Bangkok fashion hub.

The 1st North East Indian Mt. Everest expedition has set off for the final summit for the Mt. Everest from the Everest Base camp. Three teams of school children from Assam – two from Nagaon and one from Tezpur in Sonitpur district – have made excellent presentation in a global teleconferencing coordinated by the civil engineering department of North Dakota State University of the USA on Wednesday on their project on Rediscovering Water.

Union Ministry of Home Affairs will conduct special recruitment drives in the month of May-June, 2013 in the border districts of Assam for Category-Constable/GD posts. These special recruitment rallies will be conducted for filling up the vacancies which remain unfilled after the recruitment through Staff Selection Commission. This would be preceded by 15 days long training session to be organized by the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to acquaint/acclimatize the candidates with the examination process. In this connection, the State Government has directed all the Deputy Commissioners of the State to arrange awareness campaigns to ensure adequate participation of the candidates.
Ekhon Nedekha Nodir Xipare (As the River Flows), a film by debutant director Bidyut Kotoky on the troubled river island Majuli has won two awards at the Washington DC South Asian Film Festival (DCSAFF). The 90-minute film which is inspired by the ‘unfortunate’ incident of kidnapping and murdering of social activist Sanjay Ghose in 1997 in Majuli was awarded for best script and best actor.
