Baby Elephant beaten unto death in Morigaon
A three year old baby elephant was brutally killed by a group of senseless mob near Jagiroad in Morigaon district on October 26 . According to the eyewitness,the calf with severe injury missed the herd and was loitering alone with a painful body in the swampy area of a village. Seeing the calf at such a condition, the group of villagers soon attacked the calf with sharp weapons like knife, axe bamboo etc. sticks and beaten it unto death. Experiencing such kind of strange behaviour and to safe its life the elephant calf tried to run away to safer places but the senseless and brutal mob of the village chased it and at last killed the innocent animal for no reason.
It might be mentioned here that the man and elephant conflicts gradually increasing in Assam following large encroachment forest areas forcing the elephant to leave their habitat in search of food and sometimes destroy not only the paddy fields but also houses in the villages. This sometimes prompts the villagers to attack the elephants for their safety as well as protection of the paddy fields. But the injured 3 year old baby elephant calf was not at all involved in such activities.

Dr Apurba Kumar Saikia, a noted short story writer of Assam, was conferred the Jadab Sarma Memorial award at the Chandra Prasad Saikia Kshetra at the Nagaon Book Fair ground recently. The award was instituted in the memory of Jadab Sarma, a writer of the abahan era, since 2005.The award was presented to Dr Saikia for his short story collection 'Bojarat Edin'. Not less than 176 voters under Baghara Gaon Panchayat will be deprived from casting vote in the ensuing Panchayat polls in Morigaon district.According to sources, the names of the villagers of Middhralipather whose names omitted from the voters' list, were all Assamese people. An Executive Member (EM) of Tiwa Autonomous Council, Hema Kanta Deka was arrested by police on November 10 on charges of cheating and illicit collection of money from unemployed youth of various parts of Nagaon and Morigaon districts assuring them government jobs. A police source revealed that Hema Kanta Deka, who also served as General Secretary of Morigaon District Youth Congress, has been pocketing lakhs of rupees from hundreds of unemployed youth since 1992, assuring them jobs specially teachers' ones in LP and ME schools of the aforesaid districts.
