Second convocation of NERIST on August 4


The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology attained 25 years of its existence witnessing different stages of development. The unconventional modular pattern of technical education of NERIST has proved itself worthy and highly successful in that pattern. The Institute has attained the Deemed University Status in the year 2005. The Institute has celebrated its Silver Jubilee Year in the year 2009 on March 4. The First Convocation of NERIST was addressed by Her Excellency the President of India Smti Prativa Devisingh Patil, on April 1, 2009.


NERIST is all set for its second convocation scheduled for August 4. Former President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam has kindly consented to deliver the Convocation address and award Gold Medals and Degrees to the successful students in the fields of sciences, technology and management. His Excellency the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Gen. J. J. Singh, who is also the President of the NERIST Society, Prof. Gautam Baruah, Director of IIT-Guwahati and who is also the Chairman of NERIST Board of Management, and a host of other dignitaries are slated to grace the occasion.


NERIST shall award I5 M. Tech, 10 M. Sc. (FO), 12 MBA, 171 B. Tech. and 11 B. Sc. (FO) degrees, including 10 Gold medals for the year 2009, and for the year 2010, 11 M. Tech., 11 M. Sc. (FO), 34 MBA, 125 B. Tech. and 15 B. Sc. (FO) degrees, along with 10 Gold medals, in the Convocation on 4th August, 2010. This year NERIST will also be awarding its first Ph. D. degree to a Computer Sc. and Engineering scholar.


Besides the above, Diploma Module and Certificate Module pass out students of both 2009 and 2010 batch are going to get their diplomas and certificates.


As known to everybody, the young generations of students of schools, colleges and universities of our country are highly encouraged by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam to build the future India which can challenge the world in all fields of sciences, technologies and management sciences, NERIST is organizing an Interaction Session of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam with school children from different schools of the capital complex of Itanagar, on 3rd August, 2010 at Darbar Hall in the Rajbhawan of Arunachal Pradesh.


The Convocation function and Convocation Address by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on 4th August, from 09.45 hours onwards, as well as the Interaction session of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam with school students on 3rd August, 2010, from 17.00 hours onwards will be live telecast by NERIST through the satellite channel of NE TV.

I really feel proud to be from the first batch of NERIST....I definitely regret to having missed our convocation....but definitely cherish such news where in President of India has been giving away the degrees to the passing out Neristians. I have been lucky to have worked with our former President very closely

Thats a wonderful achievement! I feel proud to have been a part of this legacy. As the first batch of the institute we were pioneers and braved the initial hiccups to see this day!! Would have loved to take part in the convocation if I had some prior information! Congratulations anyways!

It fills me with great pride to have been a part of the legacy that has culminated to this day. I am not only proud to be a NERISTian but wear it on my sleve everywhere I go. The Centre is ready to talk with ULFA if they drop the sovereignty demand. Reiterating it at a press conference in New Delhi on Thursday, Union home minister P Chidambaram said that if the rebel outfit operating in Assam wants to sit in talk with the government they must eschew the path of violence. The Union minister further hoped that the ULFA do these in 2010 to ensure a meaningful peace process. On the other hand, the Centre has extended the ceasefire term with NDFB and DHD(J). During this period, there will be no crackdown against the two rebel outfits.
A moderate intensity earthquake has jolted Assam and its neighbouring north eastern states on Thursday. The tremor was felt at around 3-28 in the afternoon forcing a section of residents in Guwahati to come out of their houses. However, there is no immediate report of any casualty and damage. The quake has rattled two days after the quake of 5.4 intensity that jolted the region on Tuesday. Details are awaited.
Immense resources available for development for the north eastern region will come up for a thought provoking discussion as the non resident Indians from Assam will rub shoulders on January 11 and 12 in Guwahati. Organised by the Friends of Assam & Seven Sisters, the two days event will begin at the Machkhowa Cultural Complex on January 11. Disclosing this at a press conference, the Assamese NRI club officials said in Guwahati that summit will discuss the potentials to uplift the region's solar power, rural health, oil-energy and human resources. The summit will be attended also by a few prominent scientists who are at work in various parts of the country.
The fifth North Eastern Business Summit to woo investment from outside, organised by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region would be held in Kolkata on January 8 and 9. According to informaiton, organised by DoNER, in the summit, Indian Chamber of Commerce took the initiative to bring foreign investors from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia besides leading business groups. A court in Dibrugarh has remanded ULFA top leader Raja Borah to seven days police custody after he was produce before it on Sunday. Borah, the body guard of ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, has a pending murder case registered against him with Joipur police station. He was sought in the murder of Cheniram Borah, a resident of Barhoni gaon near Nahorkatiya in 2005. It may be recalled that he was produced before Kamrup Chief Judicial magistrate on Saturday along with ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa and military spokesman Raju Baruah and the duo were remanded to judicial custody and ordered Bora to be sent to Dibrugarh.
A strong earthquake has struck Assam and its neighbiuring areas pushing panic button among the people on Tuesday. The massive jolt was felt at 2-32 in the afteroon forcing a section of the people in Guwahati to come out of their homes immediately after the tremor. According to the US Geologocal Survey Centre, the intensity of the tremor stands at 5.4 in the Richter scale and its epicentre was Myanmar-India border. There is, however, no report of any loss of life and property til now.
Top ULFA leader Raja Bora is likely to be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Dibrugarh as day after chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, military spokesman Raju Baruah were sent to jail. Bora, the security guard for Rajkhowa would be produced in connection with a case pending with Jaipur police station.
