Under the theme 'Many Species. One Planet. One Future', this year’s World Environment Day was celebrated by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Nagaon with a day-long programme in the premises of Maz Jajari B P Chaliha Girls’ High School with active collaboration from local a cooperative society named “Sonai mahila dugdha utapadan samabai samitee” on the June 5. The inaugural meeting of the programme was presided over by the Headmistress of the high school, Rinti Borthakur. Dhiren Nath of KVK narrated the objectives of organizing the programme. Addressing the gathering of about 200 school children, distinguished guests and teachers, Dr. T.P.Saikia, Principal Scientist and Programme Coordinator of KVK elaborately described the significance of celebrating the World Environment Day. He called upon all present to be fully conscious of environment protection and conservation. He also discussed the importance of diverse life forms for the well being of humanity that also reminds us of our duty to safeguard the environment and reduce the loss of biodiversity. Dhiren Nath spoke on different forms of environmental pollution and the need for conservation of indigenous fish biodiversity of the State. Dr. B.K.Borah, Sr. Scientist of the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Shillongani also addressed the gathering and emphasized on the judicious use of pesticides and alternate method of plant protection in order to reduce the environmental pollution. Two senior citizens of the locality also spoke on the occasion. A tree plantation programme was also held in the school compound with active participation from all categories of people. The day-long programme of the Environment Day celebration ended with Quiz competition organized among the school children of the locality where altogether ten groups of four schools participated. C.K.Deka and J.K.Dutta of KVK acted as quiz master and Sibani Das and U.K.Deka assisted them in conducting the quiz programme. The winners were also awarded prizes and certificates by the Programme Coordinator of KVK.
Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Assam Agricultural University, Nagaon and Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology, Regional Centre Guwahati under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, GOI have organised a day long training programme at Nagaon on 12.12.2011. About 60 farmers (both man and women) from 7 villages of the district have attended the programme where topics related to food processing in horticultural crops were thoroughly discussed. At the beginning of the training programme, Dr Mrinal Saikia, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Nagaon has welcomed the trainees and delivered a lecture on post harvest handling and value addition of potato and other tuber crops.
