A group of CRPF jawans today caught three persons with brown sugar at Jania Road, Metuakuchi at Barpeta town under Barpeta PS in Barpeta district at about 11.40. According to report said that the group of 6 CRPF ( No-C-10) batellian of Barpeta road Paat Bazar led by inspector of CRPF Bhim Singh had got the information about the drugs businessmen formerly and that is why the group were wandering at Jania road in order to catch the drugs businessmen. One of the CRPF jawans in dsguise of customer had been awaiting in a Tata Sumo ( As- 10-M-1473) for the drugs businessmen. As soon as one of the businessmen Chand Mia (30), son of Kurpan Ali of Kandapara under Barpeta PS in Barpeta district came to sell the Brown sugar to the jawan in exchange of three lakhs of rupees, he was caught red handed. The other two persons were about to fled away, but the group of CRPF jawans caught them. The two others were-- Nurul Haque Mallik(22), son of Abdul Baset Mallik of Jaher pam in Barpeta district under Barpeta PS and another one Samejuddin (35) son of Banij Mia of Bheragaon in Barpeta district. The CRPF group recovered from them a packet of suspected brown sugar ( 950 gm), three mobile hand sets. In the packet it was mentioned that it was manufactured in Thailand, Double Tiger, weight- 950 and at last a name was also written Dr. Umesh ch. Talukdar. According to the confession of Samejuddin Chand Mia brought the brown sugar packet and he( Samejuddin) contacted with the CRPF jawans. On the contrary Chand Mia had taken the brown sugar from one Inal. The cost of the seized brown sugar would be lakhs of rupees in international market. ULFA killed at Nasatra village

Two ULFA 709 battalion cadres were killed in an encounter at Nasatra village under Sarthebari PS in Barpeta district yesterday at about 1 pm. Life imprisonment for one

The additional sessions Judge FTC (First Track Court), Barpeta sentenced one Pranab Nath of Howly village in Barpeta district under U/S 448/380/302 IPC imprisonment for life in connection with a murder case. According to report, on June 12, 2006, the accused entered into the house of one Ananta Roy of Bamundi village under Sarthebari, Barpeta dist and killed the son of the family with sharp weapon and had taken Rs.2000/ and some ornaments from their house. Ananta Das lodged an FIR before I/C Howly on June 13, 2006.

One dead, 20 injured in a bus mishap at Kaljhar, near Howly

One person died and about 20 others injured in a bus accident at Kaljhar, near Howly in Barpeta district today at around 4 pm. A Tinsukia-bounded bus (No- AS-01-V1367) set out from Barpeta Road met with the accident at Kaljhar on No.31 National Highway near Howly. The deceased was not identified till filing this report. The injured passengers were sent to Howly PHC and Barpeta civil hospital.

Bajali sub-division women cell formed

The chairperson, Assam State commission for women, Mridula Sahariya visited Bajali sub-division recently to attend in a discussion meet about various legal matters, women empowerment and to bring awareness regarding pollution free environment. In this meeting a Bajali sub-division women cell was formed taking 10 members with Deepak Kr. Choudhury, SDO, (civil), Bajali as chairman and Puspanjali Das, ACS, CO, Bajali Revenue Circle as member. The meeting also discussed about the dowry death, and women harassment problems by the male folk of the society.

Beki river erosion collapses 35 houses at Jania

The mighty river Beki eroded most of the part of Jania area in Barpeta district. At present it has become a threat to the Jania xatra. About 35 houses have been collapsed. So far 50 villages and thousands of villagers have became homeless and taking shelter government reserves and on the road. On the other hand, under Mandia Develoment Block hbidongra, Kharki, Dongra, Salmara, Niralachar, Paruachar, Jadavpur villages have been eroded.

Nabajit Das Pathak elected as Deka Xatriya of Barpeta Xatra

Nabajit Das Pathak elected as the Deka Xatriya of Barpeta that was held on June 28. The uniqueness of the selection of the Xatriyas of Barpeta Xatra is that here the representatives are selected in a election. This time, for the post of Deka Xatriya, three candidates filed nominations namely. Nabajit Das Pathak defeated his nearest rival Sadhucharan Das by 1111 votes. For the members of the Xatra managing committee total 45 candidates filed nomination papers and 12 members have already been selected as uncontested and other 16 members elected.

Continuous load-shedding hits Barpeta

Normal life in entire Barpeta district paralyzed due to irregular load-shedding by the Electricity Board. Out of twenty four hours electricity is available only three to four hours a day. As the half-yearly examinations have started from today the continuous load-shedding has seriously affected the academic environment of the entire district. Road Accident in Barpeta

Twenty one injured in a road accident at Sonkuchi Colony of Barpeta town today at about 7.40 am. According to report, a Dhuburi-bound highspeeded Bolero pickup FB (No-AS-15 C 0699) vehicle lost it's control and 21 labours of that vehicle were injured. To rescue the injured the 108 health service and police were informed by the gathered people. However, help reached an hour late.
