Big blow to ULFA - Commander of 27 battalion killed
Mridul Kalita (35) alias Samarjyoti Saikia alias Mani Kakati,son of Dhani Ram Kalita (70) of the village Niz Sarabarihas been killed in a joint operation of Udalguri police and 65 Fileld Regiment,Kalaigaon and 315 Field Regiment (KARGIL) Udalguri under Red Horns Division of army yesterday night at the village Kaweimari under Kalaigaon police station.According to information Mridul Kalita had joined ULFA in 1998 and was acting as the commander i/c of 27 battalion of the outfit since the death of Lt.Bacha Sing on the night of February 2 near Kalaigaon.The killed ULFA commander had been taking shelter in the residence of Chinta Ram Barua at the time of incident.The ULFA leader tried desperately to escape unhurt by throwing a granade before he was shot dead.Police and army recovered a hand granade; one nine mm pistol;12 live ammunitions; 93 mobile sim cards;8 mobile hand sets;one bicycle; 12 exortion letters and a cash amount of rupees two lakhs and five thousand from his possetion. Security forces picked up Hiren Barua and Dulal Deka from the spot for interrogation.

A minor girl dead and dozen others fell ill after they consumed prasad served at a religious function in Udalguri district on Friday. The tragic incident took place in Kalaigaon area where a ten year old girl died early in the morning. At least 71 others have complained of stomach ace and vomitting hours after they consumed prasad. The deceased was identified as Dipsikha Nath who died at the Mangaldai Civil Hospital. Talking to media, ADC DN Hazariaka said that the incident took place hours after they consumed prasad at the house of Harakanta Nath on Wednesday.
