Three leopard cubs killed in Jorhat

Guwahati: For the Mahbandha Samaguri Tea Estate, tigers are not burning bright as some workers in the garden killed three leopard cubs on Monday much to the disappointment of those who love nature.

According to eyewitness, the disturbing incident took place at a distance of 3 km from Jorhat town at around 12-30 pm. A few women labourers in the garden saw three cubs in the garden area and started screaming.

People working nearby rushed to the spot with sharp bows and arrows and attacked these three cubs killing them on the spot. All these three cubs have not cross 4 four years of age.

Immediately after the incident, police from the Pulibar Police Station arrived in the spot and took away the dead bodies to hand these over to the forest department officials.

Police officials say feline terror gripped the area last year while the tiger family was seen in the west Jorhat area. The tigers have been disturbing the area at regular intervals by claiming a good number of cows and goats forcing the department officials to step in. But these tigers managed to escape the trap by the department.

For the last one year, the people of the area have been using crackers to disperse the family to get ride of the terror. Investigation is going on but no one has so far been apprehended.

But the people in the area have yet to get out of the fear as they have yet to trace the mother of these three cubs.

The inhuman killing of these cubs is bound to draw sharp reaction from the nature lovers as the save animal save human slogan continues to rent the sky.

Speaking to Assam Times, a few nature lovers say the people could have informed the police as soon as they saw the cubs to avoid the tragic incident. They term the killing as barbaric and inform that they will approach the authorities seeking action against those involved in it.

There is an urgent need to educate our people to save the endangered, and those who succeeds in doing so must be honoured. We seldom shower laurels upon such people who saves the environment.
