On behalf the Journalists’ Forum, Assam we strongly condemn the callous and irresponsible comments of the self styled ULFA military chief Paresh Barua threatning to the journalists and intellectuals of the State who dare to oppose the diktat of the banned outfit.
ULFA, now under severe crisis after most of its leaders behind the bar, is imposing a ban on the celebration of Independence Day and Republic Day since long back. They argue that there is no meaning of celebrating these Days in Assam and Northeast India.
ULFA leaders not only impose diktat on the celebration, but also issue threats to everyone who come against their diktats with dire consequences. It is observed that a section of the separatist elements in the region have made it a habit to impose a ban on the celebration of both the Days.
But we must not forget that right from the War of Kurukhetra upto the National Freedom Movement, Assam has always been a part of the History of India. The immense sacrifice of the martyrs from Assam who laid down their lives in the Freedom Movement needs to be recognized and the Independence Day and the Republic Day are two such occasions to pay our hamage to those national heroes.
Because of their supreme sacrifice we are an independent nation today and we have the moral duty and responsibility to pay tributes to the martyrs and salute the National Tricolour on those special days.
To pay tributes to the patriots and martyrs who suffered and sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the nation, we appeal to the people of Assam and Northeast India to celebrate the forthcoming Republic Day on January 26 and hoist the Tricolour in every house hold and every locality of the region.
The journalists and citizens of Guwahati are also welcome to Guwahati Press Club to participate in the flag-hoisting ceremony starting at 11 in the morning of January 26, 2010.
