Independence Day in Kuwait

Inquisitiveness, curiosity n proudness filled me as I got ready to attend the 62nd Independence Day at Indian Embassy,Kuwait. As we drove to the Embassy at 6.30am to reach and be part of the flag hoisting at 7.10am ,my mind was filled with different thoughts…thoughts of the many Indenpence Day we celebrated in our motherland Assam under the shadow of Assam Bandh . My one year daughter too wake up early that day as if she understood the importance of this special day. As we approach’d the embassy my husband park’d our car atleast 1km from the embassy as there was no space as hundreds of cars were already parked. As we came near the embassy we were pleasantly surprised to see hundreds of Indians from different walks of life and some like me with infants. People had Indian Flags in their hands. I felt so happy and proud when my infant daughter too took a flag and was waving. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat, Mera Bharat Mahan echoed in the air. The “Borah Drummers”, the members are Guajarati Muslims exhibited their talent and skills. Small school children and Doctors community sang patriotic songs. The Indian Ambassador Ajai Malhotra hosted the national tri-colour flag as we all stood there with proudness. He read out the Prime Minister of India Dr Manmohan Singh’s message ,the speech which he gave to millions of Indians from the Red Fort .He also read out the various facilities and schemes that the embassy has taken for thousands of Indian workers. After the cultural programme was over ,the Ambassador met the common people and listen to their grievances if any. Deep feeling of proudness enveloped thousands who gathered there to be part of such a celebration. Mughal Mahal, a famous Indian restaurant gave free breakfast (paratha,chola,sweets) to thousands of people who gathered . Free supplements on Independence Day were distributed by The Times(Kuwait’s premier weekly newspaper) and Arab Times(Kuwait’s national daily).


In a foreign country that too in a Middle East Muslim country like Kuwait we celebrated it so much fun, proudness and most importantly without fear, then why not in our motherland Assam??Can’t we be like rest of India and foreign countries in observing our Independence Day???When will such a day come???These thoughts filled my mind as we drove back home.


I remembered Jawaharlal Nehru’s Independence Day speech…. "Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we will redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.... We end today a period of ill fortune, and India discovers herself again."


Its time for us, all assamese people to defy the Bandh and celebrate it with love, fun and frolic.

The Ambassador infact read out the President of India's message and not the Prime Minister's. Anyhow thanks to Parimita for sharing her thoughts. We too feel proud like her to be part of the celebrations of our great nation.

Pom-ba, it was a great coverage for us to know about how NRIs feel about their country and Independence. We Indians are actually, patriotic by birth; it is in our subconscious to feel great and own about our country. No matter where we live in heart we are always INDIANS, and the whole world today recognizes that.We must always endeavor to do better than before wherever we are, and mere that doing only will take our nation even higher and greater. ICL, the breakway cricket league manages to lure three Assam cricketers

Guwahati : Three Assam Cricketers- Abu Nascim Ahmed, Parvez Aziz and Sujay Tarafdar had singed up for the Essel Group’s breakaway venture Indian Cricket League (ICL) on Tuesday. BREAKING NEWS : Assam Minister Ingti survives bomb attack at residence

Guwahati : Assam Minister Khar Singh Ingti narrowly escaped an attack when miscreants hurled a bomb at his Howraghat residence at about 10.15 am. The bomb suspected to be a grenade missed the residence and exploded against the boundary wall. No casualities have been reported.The miscreants managed to flee in their motorcycle. The Minister was there in his house at that time.

Leopard killed by Villagers in Guwahati

Guwahati : A big cat was killed by the villagers after it had attacked and severely injured two persons at Garobasti in Segunbari hills in the wee hours, under Fatashil Ambari Police Station area in Guwahati. Guwahati, the capital city of northeastern state of Assam has around eleven reserve forests, having one of the highest urban wildlife concentration in the world. Eight people arrested with Rhino horn

Bongaigaon : A pistol with one live bullet and a Rhino horn were seized by Bongaigaon police from a group of eight miscreants during a routine road checking on 27-08-07 at Bongaigaon, around 200 kms away from Guwahati. There is a good market for the horns of Rhinos--sold to make medicines, aphrodisiacs, or the decorative handles of daggers. Rhino horn can be sold throughout Asia and the Middle East, for up to $37,000 (Rs. 1.5 million) per kilo, which encourages poachers. This year poachers have killed at least 12 one-horned rhinos at the sanctuary and it was the first time in a decade that the number of rhinos killed in a year had hit double figures, officials said.

Address the urban poor: Dr Singh tells CM

Guwahati : Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has adised the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to prepare a time-bound action plan for providing all basic services for the urban poor in major cities in the state.Official sources here say in a letter, the Prime Minister has sought Mr Gogoi’s personal attention to promote the concept of inclusive cities in which every citizen has reasonable and affordable access to basic amenities. Dr Singh says while the states have responded to the challenges offered by the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), a need to focus is there on the component of basic services to the urban poor to implement the charter of the JNNURM....

Khagen Mahanta admitted to Down Town Hospital

Guwahati: Assam’s veteran artist Khagen Mahanta has been ailing in the city based Down Town Hospital. According to information, the musician was admitted to the hospital two days back. GUWAHATI, Aug 26: A two-member team of the Union Health Ministry is arriving here on August 27 to take stock of the situation arising out of cholera deaths. Ulfa killed by Ulfa in Jorhat

Jorhat : Police on Saturday recovered an unidentified bullet ridden dead body from Taraigaon under Borhola police station bordering Nagaland in Jorhat district. According to police, prima facie of the incident hints it to be a fratricide by ULFA. Locals residing area informed police that a group of five-six armed youth suspected to be ULFA members in civil fatigue came from Myanmar on foot and attacked a comrade on Friday late night who was on a motorcycle coming from the opposite side near Borhola Nagabat. He was killed in the spot and the others managed to flee. The dead body is being kept in Jorhat civil hospital morgue for identification

New Assam Olympic Association body formed

Guwahati: The much-awaited annual general meeting of the Assam Olympic Association was held today which retained Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi as the President of the organization. However, the posts of the secretary and treasurer saw two new faces this time. Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain replaced outgoing secretary Mukut Medhi while Raj Kakoti, assistant secretary of the former committee, has taken over the post of treasurer.The annual general meeting of the AOA, held at the Sarusajai Sports complex today, was presided over by President Tarun Gogoi.
