Assam Chief Minister Trun Gogoi on Saturday makes a clarion call to the misguided youths to eschew the path of violence to help the state develop on all fronts. Unfurling the national tricolour and inspecting the guard of honour by army police and para military forces at the Latasil Playground on the 63rd Independence Day in the morning Gogoi said his government has a slew of measures to ensure an all round development of the state.
He said the government is considering a rural development council to boost the rural economy. Gogoi expressed grave concern over the uneasy law and order situation in the two hills district and said these would be firmly dealt withy. He further said the hills districts would get a medical college and an university.
Citing the grim power scenario, the Chief Minister said the government would stress thermal and gas based power to solve the problem. In his speech, Gogoi further cited the notable progress of the gas cracker project in Dibrugarh district. The Chief Minister’s address was followed by a cultural programme showcasing the state’s rich cultural heritage.
Hills area development minister Khorsingh Ingty suddenly fell ill as he was unfurling the national tricolour at Diphu. But later, he resumed the function.
The Independence Day celebration was by and large peaceful and there is no report of any incident from any parts of the state. Tight security is what in place in Assam in view of the general strike call by ULFA and four other rebel outfit.

Properties worth several lakh have been reduced to ashes when a
massive fire broke out in Guwahati on Monday.
Initially, the fire broke out at a shop in Junali area which later
spread to the adjacent shops. Five fire tenders have been rushed to
the spot to douse the flames. The reason is yet to be ascertained but
according to preliminary report the fire originated from the electric
short circuit.
Security forces in Tinsukia district recovered a huge cache of
explosives on Sunday.
Acting on a tip off army and police raided a house in Laila Dhulijan
where a huge cache of explosives were recovered. These include 3
bottle grenades and 12 detonetor sticks along 2 KG RDX, 2 Chinese
grenades. The explosives were recovered after security forces arrested
an ULFA militant in the area.
In a bizarre incident that runs into a statewide shockwave, a woman allegedly hacked to death her husband during a quarrel over his persistent drinking habit in Sibsagar district on Sunday. The incident took place early on Sunday, when Lalita Chettri attacked her husband, who was in his early 40s, with an axe after the couple had an argument over the husband's drinking habit.
