Residential multi-skill and leadesrhip programme inaugurated by Chief Minister

A three week long residential multi skill and leadership development programme was launched by Chief Minister of Assam Sri Tarun Gogoi at a brief and solemn function held at the State Museum Auditorium on 10th July, 2009 at 11 am. The programme is being organized jointly by the newly established IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training , Shillong , in collaboration with North East Girl Students Association (NEGSA) , North East Development Finance Corporation Limited(NEDFI) and sponsored by Oil India Limited. Altogether 90 participants from various parts of the NE region are participating in the event , who have been provided to and fro traveling expense and free accommodation and fooding by the organizing committee. About 20 participants are drawn from families from Kokrajhar, Bagsa, Nalbari, Barpeta etc that have become the victim of terrorist violence The main objective of the programme is to build up a dedicated and empowered group of trained young women who can play a proactive role in the nation building process. During the programme , the participants are being trained in Yoga and meditation, Art of Public Speaking, Communication Skill, Physical Fitness , Self Defence, Legal Awareness, RTI Act, Entrepreneurship Awareness, Self Confidence, Leadership Training, Time Management,. Interview skill, Disaster Management and First Aid training, Raising Emotional Intelligence etc.


Miss Munmi Dutta, President, NEGSA , delivered the welcome address . Sri Tarun Gogoi in his inaugural speech appreciated the effort taken up by IGNOU and NEGSA and assured all possible help from the State Government. He stated that the Govt shall come forward to help in setting up a full fledged Vocational Training Centre for providing round the year training programmes, Referreing to the National Skill development Mission, he said that there are many talented women in the region who can establish themselves to be successful entrepreneurs by receiving proper guidance and assistance.


The inaugural programme was also addressed by Padmashree Natwar Thakkar, Mr Rekibuddin Ahmed, Member Secretary, State Level Advisory Board for welfare of Youth and Students, Mr Akshoy Sharma, general Manager( Planning) , NEDFI, Mrs Bina Gupta, Vice Principal, Hansdique Girls’ College., Mr Khalilur Rahman, Project Co-ordinator of Aswas for Barpeta District. and Dr Gagan Chandra Baruah, Former Principal, Handique Girls’ College.


Dr Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional Director, IGNOU , Guwahati Regional centre , offered the Vote of thanks. She mentioned about the various initiatives that has been taken up by the Guwahati Regional Centre for the benefit of the youth of the region which includes Screen Printing training, Mobile Phone Repairing, etc All these programmes are conducted free of cost and a large number of youths and women have benefited from it.

It is really heartening to know that IGNOU and OIL are coming forward to practically help the women of the region. Other Corporate sectors should also adopt agenda to help and train the vast pool of young women who can be made highly skilled to compete at the National as well as International level. Tourism development is one sector which have great potentiality and needs to be focussed.

Empowering and training the young girls is the need of the hour. Remarkable transformations in the society can be achieved through the development of the girl and young women. Indeed a very good effor, which needs to be replicated at all the states of NE region.

Tea Board regional office in Jorhat

The Tea Board is in a process to shift its regional office from Guwahati to Jorhat. If everything goes hunky dory, the country's tea apex body will ensure it within a short spell of six months. AASU enforces road blockade at Gerukamukh

The anti dam protest received yet another boost when hundreds of AASU activists started a three day long blockade at Gerukamukh to disrupt the supplies of machinaries to the NHPC-owned big dams construction site. Talking to Assamtimes,local AASU leaders said that they started the blockade from Friday to end on Sunday. They further said that the would force Assam and Arunachal Pradesh governments to stop the construction of mega dams till it is ensured that the downstream areas would have no adverse impact. AASU began the road blockade immediately after KMSS suspended protest in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji for three days.

Devastating fire guts 35 houses in Sivasagar

Properties worth several lakh have been reduced to ashes when a devastating fire broke out in Sivasagar on Saturday. The incident took place in the evening at Station Chariali in the heart of the town where at least 30 houses were razed to ground. The fire broke out immediately after the burst of a LPG cylinder at around 7-30 in the evening which later was quickly spreading to the adjacent houses. Fire tenders were arrived in the spot but by then the fire engulfed more than 30 houses including some shops. The extent of damage is yet to be ascertained.

Tuki seeks Centre’s intervention

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has sought Centre’s intervention to resolve the big dam agitation simmering in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji. The Chief minister on Friday called on Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde in Delhi and sought his intervention in the on-going agitation against NHPC project at Gerukamukh. He called on Sindhe after protesters served a two-day ultimatum to Dispur to break the stalemate and threatened to go for a massive blockade. Big dam blockade called off for 2 days

Lakhim and Dhemaji districts are set to heave a sigh of relief. KMSS, AJYCP, TMPK have called off the big dam blockade from Saturday. Addressing a press conference in Lakhimpur on Friday, KMSS leader Akhil Kumar Gogoi said that they would suspend the blockade on Saturday and Sunday. Gogoi raps KMSS and anti-dam protestors

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday accused KMSS and other anti big dam organizations of trying to foment trouble in the state. Addressing a function in Jorhat, Gogoi said those agitating against the mega dam donot want any process of development to take place and that they want unrest to prevail in the state. Gogoi’s statement assumes significance a day after he alleged presence of ULFA and Maoist elements in the anti big dam protest.

New DGP announcement at any time

The Assam government is on the hunt for getting a new DGP appointed to replace Shankar Baruah who retires on Saturday. According to information, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is actively considering two names----SC Goswami and Jayanta Narayan Chaudhury. Goswami, is senior most additional DGP who is working as chairman cum Managing director with Assam Police Housing Corporation. Another name is Jayanta Narayan Choudhury. He is 1978 batch IPS officer and is in the stint as Next in seniority is additional director, IB. The name is expected to finalise within the next 12 hours. Notably, Shankar Baruah retires on Saturday.

ULFA, Maoist back anti dam protestors: Gogoi

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday alleged presence of ULFA and Maoist elements in the simmering anti big dam agitation in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji. Talking to reporters in the sidelights of a function in Guwahati, Gogoi said that such a big demonstration in the form of road blockade was not possible for KMSS to organize without the active help and support from Maoists and ULFA. He said that the government keeps its door open to discuss anything with protestors. But in the same breath he said he wont allow anybody to take law on their own hands. “My position is clear. If one takes law on one’s hand we not remain silent.”
