Residential multi-skill and leadesrhip programme inaugurated by Chief Minister

A three week long residential multi skill and leadership development programme was launched by Chief Minister of Assam Sri Tarun Gogoi at a brief and solemn function held at the State Museum Auditorium on 10th July, 2009 at 11 am. The programme is being organized jointly by the newly established IGNOU Institute of Vocational Education and Training , Shillong , in collaboration with North East Girl Students Association (NEGSA) , North East Development Finance Corporation Limited(NEDFI) and sponsored by Oil India Limited. Altogether 90 participants from various parts of the NE region are participating in the event , who have been provided to and fro traveling expense and free accommodation and fooding by the organizing committee. About 20 participants are drawn from families from Kokrajhar, Bagsa, Nalbari, Barpeta etc that have become the victim of terrorist violence The main objective of the programme is to build up a dedicated and empowered group of trained young women who can play a proactive role in the nation building process. During the programme , the participants are being trained in Yoga and meditation, Art of Public Speaking, Communication Skill, Physical Fitness , Self Defence, Legal Awareness, RTI Act, Entrepreneurship Awareness, Self Confidence, Leadership Training, Time Management,. Interview skill, Disaster Management and First Aid training, Raising Emotional Intelligence etc.


Miss Munmi Dutta, President, NEGSA , delivered the welcome address . Sri Tarun Gogoi in his inaugural speech appreciated the effort taken up by IGNOU and NEGSA and assured all possible help from the State Government. He stated that the Govt shall come forward to help in setting up a full fledged Vocational Training Centre for providing round the year training programmes, Referreing to the National Skill development Mission, he said that there are many talented women in the region who can establish themselves to be successful entrepreneurs by receiving proper guidance and assistance.


The inaugural programme was also addressed by Padmashree Natwar Thakkar, Mr Rekibuddin Ahmed, Member Secretary, State Level Advisory Board for welfare of Youth and Students, Mr Akshoy Sharma, general Manager( Planning) , NEDFI, Mrs Bina Gupta, Vice Principal, Hansdique Girls’ College., Mr Khalilur Rahman, Project Co-ordinator of Aswas for Barpeta District. and Dr Gagan Chandra Baruah, Former Principal, Handique Girls’ College.


Dr Vardhini Bhattacharyya, Regional Director, IGNOU , Guwahati Regional centre , offered the Vote of thanks. She mentioned about the various initiatives that has been taken up by the Guwahati Regional Centre for the benefit of the youth of the region which includes Screen Printing training, Mobile Phone Repairing, etc All these programmes are conducted free of cost and a large number of youths and women have benefited from it.

The programme is unique, specially the effort taken to help the girls from terrorist affected families. Congratulations to IGNOU, NEGSA , NEDFI , OIL and other collaborators.

It is really heartening to know that IGNOU and OIL are coming forward to practically help the women of the region. Other Corporate sectors should also adopt agenda to help and train the vast pool of young women who can be made highly skilled to compete at the National as well as International level. Tourism development is one sector which have great potentiality and needs to be focussed.

Empowering and training the young girls is the need of the hour. Remarkable transformations in the society can be achieved through the development of the girl and young women. Indeed a very good effor, which needs to be replicated at all the states of NE region.

ULFA top leader Jiban Maran arrested

One more top ULFA leader has been captured in Myanmar along with a journalist on Saturday. According to information, the top ULFA leader has been identified as Jiban Moran, a close aide of Commander in Chief Paresh Baruah who was captured with a journalist attached with a Guwahati-based English daily. Baruah was very recently appointed finance secretary. Journalist Rajiv Bhattacharjee was believed to have gone to interview ULFA commander in chief Paresh Baruah in the Myanmar jungles. ULFA commander-in-chief' Paresh Baruah could be hiding in China or Myanmar. This was what Gajraj Corps GoC Lt Gen Shakti Gurung said on Saturday. According to him, there is no specific input on his whereabouts. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Tezpur he said there is no strong base for Maoists in Assam.

33 insurgents surrender in Tezpur

Altogether 33 ULFA and NDFB insurgents surrendered before the army and deposited arms, ammunition and explosives in Tezpur on Saturday. All they surrendered at a function organised by the army at the Nehru Maidan here. They include 32 NDFB and one ULFA militant who laid down their arms before GoC Gajraj Corps Lt Gen Shakti Gurung. The arms and ammo include three 7.62 mm AK series assault rifles, 24 pistols, nine hand grenades along with a huge quantity of explosives and ammunition. The GoC appealed to the youths to lead a normal and fruitful life in keeping with the people's yearning for enduring peace in the state.

ULFA bombs oil tankers in Duliajan; threatens more strikes

Hardly a month after it got reshaped, ULFA’s anti-talk faction struck at two oil tankers in Duliajan on Friday. The outfit further threatened to launch more devastating attacks alleging unabetted exploitation on the state’s natural resources. The banned insurgent outfit bombed two oil tankers causing a ravaging inferno in Tipling on Friday. Around ten fire tenders were called to bring the situation under control. Clear position on anti-mega dam stir

Amid strident anti mega dam protest KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi on Friday dared Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to clear his government’s position. Addressing a press conference in Lakhimpur, Gogoi said his KMSS would never allow NHPC to build the mega dam at Gerukamukh. Taking pot shot at chief minister, the KMSS leader said that Gogoi lacked proper study on the mega dams built across the globe. He said KMSS would observe anti mega dam week from Saturday to make the people aware of the adverse impact of the mega dams.

Massive protest in Lakhimpur to block big dam turbines trucks

A volatile situation erupts in Lakhimpur on Thursday when thousands of people staged massive roadblock to prevent the trucks carrying big dam turbines from proceeding towards Gerukamukh. From midnight on Thursday, the protesters led by KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi blocked the national highway defying security barricade to stop the movement of the trucks after it left Dholpur after a massive police-protester clash. Mamoni Raisom Goswami passes away

Award winning litterateur Mamoni Raisom Goswami passed away on Tuesday. The end for the Jnyanpith award winner came at around 7-30 in the morning at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the last several months. The Assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer was born in 1942 in Shillong. She was a celebrated name in the Assamese literary world. Assam RS bye polls on Dec 22

Assam is all set to go to the Rajya Sabha by-polls for the lone seat on December 22. The election commission announced the poll schedule on Monday. The bye-election has been necessitated due to the death of Silvius Condpan from Congress. The tenure of the Rajya Sabha seat in Assam in till April 2 in, 2016. Notification for the bye-elections would be issued on December 5. The last date of filing of nomination is December 12. The nominations would be scrutinised the next day. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 15 and polling would be held on December 22. The results would be announced the same day.

ULFA observes Protest Day

Despite heavy presence of security forces, the United Liberation front of Asom observed its Protest Day on Monday. In an e-mail, ULFA acting chairman, Dr Abhijit Barmon reiterated strong goal for a sovereign and independent Assam. He said that they observed the day in the Mobile Central Headquarters. Dr Barmon paid homage to those who lost their lives in the decade old armed struggle. AGP crucial meet ends in uproar

The Asom Gana Parishad concluded its general council meeting in Guwahati amid unruly scenes on Monday. It took place following an alleged remark on former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta passed by one of the party member. A section of the other members strongly criticized the party leadership for the repeated poll debacles. The general council cleared some changes in the party constitution and the copies of the party constitution would also be sent to all the districts.
