Failure and frustration haunt regime

The serial bomb blasts in Assam on the eve of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA)’s foundation day is a clear indication of the state government’s failures in protecting the lives and properties of the people. The first blast on April 6 was reported from Diphu the district headquarters of Karbi Angling in the morning, while the major incident occurred in Guwahati’s Maligaon area in the afternoon. Just after three hours another explosion was at Dhekiajuli in the district of Sonitpur. Bokajan and Mankachar were other places from where the blast reports came in. In all these incidents ten people including women and children were killed and more than eighty injured.

The state government has always tried to console the people after each and every blast that the security was tightened. But the people have now lost the confidence on such statements. All the time of incidents the innocent people are the victim. The tightened security seems to be for the VIPs only. The incident of Maligaon reflects the people’s ire against the ruling party, which has failed on all fronts. ‘Smelling’ the political conspiracy the people attacked the nearby police station and even media persons were not spared.

The ruling party has succeeded in dividing the people on false assurances through ‘paper publicity’ in every field like education, industry and employment. For education the talented students of the state prefer to go out of Assam as the atmosphere is not conducive here and ‘dismal performance’ of government in industrial sector has closed the doors for employment.

Now, since the Parliament elections are going to be held this month the ruling party desires to perform better results and the opposition parties are trying to rout out the present regime The unity in the regional party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has scared the ruling party of losing the power even in the state, if the results are not in their favor in the Lok Sabha polls.

For politicians it is important to fight for power even without doing anything for the people whom they represent. They are attracted towards the luxury, pleasures and privileges of being in power. As soon as they get the power they forget their electorate on whose strength they get the seats. A number of present contestants for Lok Sabha seats have done nothing for the society or the nation. They quote what their forefathers had done. The people are now very conscious and need a change accordingly.

One thing is very interesting so far the state government is concerned. As soon as any report of bomb blast or some major incident is reported from any part of the state, it immediately ‘suspects’ the hand of ULFA behind such incidents.

For ULFA, the day was an act out of frustration as they are losing the ground in the state and the people are dead against their criminal activities. Anyhow they tried to prove their existence and the weakness of the state government, which could not protect the people’s lives. Large numbers of abductions, extortions and killings have been done by this militant organization during last three decades and now it is unbearable and they want the return of peace in the state.

The people have long waited for a political solution to the problems but neither the government nor the militant outfit had will power to respond in positive manner. Since no solution has come out a change in regime may bring peace in the state, the people hope.
