The end of a tiger, 'Most unfortunate' - says WWF official
A full grown Royal Bengal tiger that had strayed into human habitation in Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district four days back was shot dead on monday in a joint operation launched by Forest department and Police.The tiger created panic in the area for several days and attacked some-over enthusiastic onlookers and killed a person named Uttam Saikia (45) of Sakhmutha village under Koliabor subdivision. On commenting the whole episode directed by State Forest department and Police , a WWF official said to Assam Times,” It was a really tragic moment for all nature and animal lovers.He said that there was little coordination between the participants who engaged in this task and they neither tried to tranquilize nor capture the tiger nor prevent villagers from making undue intervention. “ At a time when tiger conservation has become a major global issue , it is tragic that the tiger was killed. He could have been captured as he was not a man-eater”, the official further said. Dr Prashanta Bodo ,the vet from Wildlife Trust of India ,working with the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabiliation Centre,Kaziranga,also received a bullet injury on his arm in the melee that prevailed after the tiger attack. Acording to the Forest officials, the tiger had strayed out from either Kaziranga or the Karbi Anglong hills.

To mark the World No Tobacco Day, the Raha college Internel Quality Assesment Cell ( IQAS ) on Friday took out an awarness rally at Raha where a good number of students of the college took part in. The procession by the students passed through various areas of the town shouting slogans against the uses of tobacco and the effects of the consumption of tobacco. The students called on all to quit the habit of consuming tobacco, be it any form. An uneasy calm seems to have been prevailing Nagaon following a clash between businessmen and a section of violent protestors on Tuesday.The incident took place at noon when a group of people took out a peace rally in Hoiborgaon seeking an end to bloodletting in BTAD.The rally was peaceful when they submitted a memorandum before the Deputy Commissioner.A section of the protesters turned violent after unidentified miscreants allegedly pelted stones at them.The violent protestors attack a policeman apart from damaging a few shops in the town. Parismita Das (17), an H.S first year student of Raha college died after she was run over by the upper Kapili passenger train at Thekeraguri under Raha P.S on Friday. The accident took place at 12.25 p.m. as the student was crossing the railway lines at the said point. The train was on its way to Haibargaon, Nagaon. While many suspect it could be a case of suicide, police sources said there was no suicide note left by the student.
Two youths were killed when their motorcycle hit a stranded truck near Raha on Saturday.The tragic incident took place in the wee hours at Bagariguri when the duo, identified as Khalil Ali and Pharidul Islam, were riding on their two wheelers.Suddenly, they were believed to have lost control over the motorcycle bearing No ML - 09-A-3676 hit the bamboo laden truck bearing No AS-01P-0183.
