Moran Community Launches 'Jatiya Gan Mancha' at Kakopathar Rally

In a historic gathering that marks a new chapter in Moran political mobilization, the Moran community today formally launched its new political platform, Jatiya Gan Mancha (National People’s Forum), at a mass assembly held at Kakopathar public ground. The event was convened under the aegis of leading Moran organizations, including the Assam Moran Sabha, All Moran Students’ Union, Moran Mahila Parishad, Moran Sahitya Sabha, Moran Art & Culture Development Centre, and the Moran National Educational Development Forum.

The assembly commenced with ceremonial tributes to the community’s forebears, accompanied by devotional songs and cultural performances, setting a solemn and festive tone for the proceedings. Following this, the platform’s name was officially unveiled, accompanied by the presentation of its anthem, composed by musician Lateshwar Chetia.

Retired Deputy Superintendent of Police Hiranya Dahotia was appointed president of the newly-formed organization, with Bhulen Barua taking charge as general secretary. Other office-bearers include executive presidents Ileshwar Chetia and Rosoraj Moran. Organizers announced that the interim committee will be expanded into a full executive body by September 30, 2025, with plans to induct former members of Moran organizations into the new fold.

In a statement, Moran National Women’s Forum chairperson Deepa Saikia Baroi described the day as “historic,” emphasizing the platform’s role in uniting the community. Meanwhile, the All Moran Students’ Union reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the Moran people’s political and cultural rights. The Union’s former president and BJP leader Birinchi Naga highlighted that the formation of Jatiya Gan Mancha presents an opportunity for the community to assert its rightful political representation and safeguard its cultural identity.

Notably, the platform clarified that it will focus solely on the Moran Autonomous Council and will not contest Assembly or Lok Sabha elections. The Moran Autonomous Council, spread across districts including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Moran, Sivasagar, and Charaideo, comprises 30 constituencies, with five seats reserved for women and an electorate ranging from 2,800 to 3,000 voters per constituency.

The rally concluded with over a thousand participants performing Moran Bihu dances, reflecting the community’s rich cultural heritage. Organizers also announced plans for the creation of dedicated youth and women’s wings to strengthen grassroots engagement.

The launch of Jatiya Gan Mancha comes amid ongoing demands by the Moran community for recognition and autonomy. The move is widely seen as a strategic step toward political consolidation and a bid to amplify the community’s voice within Assam’s broader socio-political landscape.
