Tai-Ahom History Study Cell Inaugurated at North Lakhimpur University

The “Tai-Ahom History Study Cell” at North Lakhimpur University was formally inaugurated under the initiative of the Tai-Ahom Students’ Society of the University. The inauguration ceremony was held at Dr. Bishwanarayan Shastri Library, with Dr. Biman Chandra Chetia, Registrar of the University, attending as the chief inaugurator.

The event was attended by Academic Coordinator Bhanikanta Konwar, faculty members, library officials, students, and invited guests including cultural entrepreneur Dipkol Lahan and Joint Secretary of Lakhimpur Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Udit Phukan.

The ceremony began with a felicitation of the Registrar by the Tai-Ahom Students’ Society, where he was presented with a traditional Phulam Gamosa. The felicitation was offered by Saifa Sandikoi. In his inaugural speech, Dr. Biman Chetia highlighted the importance of historical studies and the preservation of ancient manuscripts.

Senior faculty members also shared their reflections—Prof. Dr. Arbind Rajkhowa of the Assamese Department spoke on “Authentic Evaluation of Buranjis”, while Prof. Dr. Swapnali Gogoi of the Geography Department delivered an encouraging address.

Guest speaker Dipkol Lahan emphasized the need for preserving old artifacts connected with history, while other dignitaries, including Dr. Mousumi Chetia, Dr. Ishmirekha Sandikoi, Bhanikanta Konwar, Dipkol Lahan, and Udit Phukan, each contributed valuable books to the newly established study cell.

Acknowledgments were extended to Librarian Nijora Gogoi, Assistant Librarian Pranjal Dulakasaria, and the entire library staff for their support in setting up the cell.

The ceremony was coordinated by Uddhab Tamuli Phukan, General Secretary of the Tai-Ahom Students’ Society of North Lakhimpur University.

Developed through the collective efforts of students, teachers, and staff over the past six months, the “Tai-Ahom History Study Cell” will be open to students and the general public from Tuesday, August 26.

All Assam Poets Conference concluded with release of 7 volumes

The state level conference of “Sadou Akham Kobi Sonmilon” is concluded on January 22 at Bhupen Hazarika Memorial field at Namrup. The three days conference was started from January 22 with variety of cultural and literary programmes. Seven volumes of writings on poetry, novel and literature were released. Research book on literature released at Nazira

The Woman cell of Nazira College has published a book on Assamese literature "Akhaidha Hadhan", which is released by Aboni Borthakur, Founder and retired Principal of Nazira college. Some essential topics of noted litterateurs are included in this book which is edited by Luis Handique and Sujata Borthakur, lecturers of Nazira college.

Punaram Mili elected president of ONGC All India Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste welfare Association

Punaram Mili, an employee of Assam Asset, is the first Assamese, who elected as president of All India Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Tribe welfare Association. Mai-Kou-Chum-Phai is being organised at Lakwa Shyam Gaon

Mai-Kau-Sum-Phai is organised as the traditional festival of Tai community of Budha religion at Lakwa-Chola-Shyam Gaon on February 7 with day-long programme. Traditional ritual and variety of cultural events will be held on this occasion. The residents of the villageers are mainly of Kham-yang clan of Tai, who came here from Myanmer following their big brother Chow-Lung-Siu-Ka-Pha.

The Upper Assam Table Tennis Tournament starts at Dibrugarh

Table tennis player and journalist Nilim Chowdhury memorial Upper Assam Table Tennis Tournament has started from January 21 at Dibrugarh Indoor Stadium. The tournament was inaugurated by Sandip Gosh, the zonal secretary of ABITA. Total 94 players from Jorhat, Sivasagar, Golaghat and Duliajan have joined this competition. The tournament will be concluded on January 23.

Tai language scholar, historian, litterateur Aijep Phukan no more

Scholar of Tai language, historian, litterateur and literary pensioner of Chetia Gaon of Lakhimpur town, Aijep Phukan died due to cardiac arrest at Dispur Nursing home on January 21 at an age of 75 years. He was born at Jalukkota-Narayanpur of Lakhimpur in 1943. Late Phukan dedicated his life for the development of Tai culture and literature. “Swadhinota Jujaru Chowfalung Urofe Ranuwa Gohainsi”, “Akhamor Atit Aru Bortomaan”, Tai Sankskritir Jilikoni”, Mohabibir Lachit Borphukan” are some noted book published by Phukon. The 27th conference of “Sivasagar district Academic Council” from January 18-19 was held at Ghilaguri High School, Khaloighugura, concluded successfully.
