The Bokota area in Assam’s Sivasagar district is grappling with one of its worst flood crises in recent years, as the overflowing Disang and Diroi rivers have inundated nearly 35 villages in West Bokota. A breach in the Diroi river embankment has worsened the situation, submerging hundreds of bighas of farmland and displacing scores of families.
Local residents, particularly farmers, are reeling under the loss of homes and livelihoods, with no access to basic amenities. Many have expressed frustration over the slow response from authorities, accusing successive governments of neglecting the recurring flood problem.
“This happens every year, yet no permanent measures are taken,” lamented a villager.
The affected communities are calling for immediate relief and a comprehensive flood management plan, including stronger embankments to prevent future breaches. Locals fear that without decisive action, the floods will continue to erode their livelihoods and the area’s economy year after year.
