Centenary Celebration of 'Bibar Laisi' Marks a Milestone in Bodo Literature

KOKRAJHAR, JULY 27: The centenary celebration of 'Bibar Laisi,' the first Bodo journal publication, was held at the auditorium hall of Udalguri College in Udalguri on Saturday. The event saw a significant turnout of prominent writers, intellectuals, and students from various schools and colleges.

The grand event, organized by the Bodo Sahitya Sabha in collaboration with the Udalguri district committee of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, marked 100 years since the Bibar Journal's inception. Published in 1924 under the editorship of Satish Chandra Basumatary, an influential writer and social thinker of the Bodos, the journal was initially brought out by the Bodo Students' Union, "Bodo Satro Sonmilan." The Bibar Laisi (Journal) had a total of eight volumes and played a crucial role in the period from 1920 to 1937, known as the Bibar Mooga in Bodo literature, which was instrumental in the development of Bodo literature and language.

The event was chaired by Dr. Surath Narzary, President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, who emphasized the importance of uplifting and developing Bodo literature and language in the modern era. Notable attendees included Assam Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, Deputy CEM of Bodoland Territorial Region Gabinda Chandra Basumatary, BKWAC CEM Mihiniswar Basumatary, and ABSU General Secretary Khanindra Basumatary.

A souvenir was unveiled to commemorate the occasion. Minister Brahma highlighted the significance of Bibar Laisi, calling it a torchbearer of Bodo literature. He recalled the contributions of those who played a pivotal role in publishing the journal.

"Today, I am very happy to be part of the centenary celebration of Bibar Laisi at Udalguri College auditorium. The 100 years of the first Bodo Journal, 'Bibar Laisi,' is a remarkable milestone," Brahma stated.

Dr. Surath Narzary, President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, remarked, "The centenary celebration of Bibar Laisi in Udalguri marks a significant milestone in the history of Bodo literature and language."
