India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. RI for two officers

Two Assam government officers were sentenced to seven years Rigorous Imprisonment for their involvement in the PDS rice scam.Tinsukia Chief Judicial Magistrate N S Deori sentenced former Kakopathar Block Development Officer Alizur Rehman Bora and Extension Officer Kshitij Kakati to seven years RI along with a fine of Rs 50,000 each. Assam Photojournalists Association (APJA) staged a silent protest against the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old photojournalist in Mumbai and demanded strict action against the culprits.APJA demanded appropriate measures to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in future. The photojournalists staged the protest in front of Guwahati Press Club with their mouths covered by black clothes. Journalists from different organisations, both from print and electronic media, participated in the protest.

Food poisoning revisits

At least 40 people have fallen ill after consuming food at a religious function near Hajo in Kamrup district on Saturday. The individual religious  function took place at a house on Friday night. After the puja, the invitees consumed 'prasad' and started complaining of uneasiness. Over 40 people suffered from vomiting and loose motion. Altogether 10 persons have been released from the hospital while 30 others are undergoing treatment.

CM reviews law and order

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday reviewed the state’s overall security scenario a day after ULFA struck at Mangoldoi police station.The meeting is believed to have decided to step up offensive against the insurgent outfits in the state.Apart from DGP Jayanta Narayan Chaudhury, ADGP, IGP, Chief secretary were also attended the meeting. Meanwhile, police have picked up four persons in this connection.

A set of laws is on the cards to deal with the witch-hunting cases in the state.The decision got a final shape at a meeting of the top police and civil officials at the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s official residence in Koinadhara. The 19 year old Assam gave a slip to her captor and fled to Delhi. Then she met social a activist who after hearing her plight helped her lodge a FIR at Sarai Rohilla police station in the Capital.

9 injured in ULFA attack

Atleast nine persons including four journalists sustained injury when ULFA exploded a powerful grenade in Mongoldoi on Thursday. The incident took place at the police station campus at 6.30 in the evening. Eyewitnesses told assamtimes that two motorcycle born youths lobbed the IED from the national highway to the campus targetting a function. The explosion took place with a huge sound leaving 9 people injured. They include 2 policemen and 4 journalists who were covering the function.The injured have been rushed to the hospital. Hours after the attack, the insurgent outfit owned up the responsibilty of the incident.
