India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. EC notice to senior minister

The Election Commission has issued a show cause notice to Nazrul Islam alleging violation of the model code of conduct by the Food and Civil Supplies Minister.The country’s poll panel issued the notice acting on a complaints by BJP for his alleged communal remark at an election meeting in Hojai on March 21.Dr Islam will have to reply to the notice by 11.30 am on April 15 or necessary action would be initiated against him.According to the complaint, Islam had said that if Narendra Modi becomes Prime Minister, it would be very bad for the Muslim community. Fierce gunbattle in Rongapahar

A heavy gun battle seems to have pressed no less panic button along the Assam-Nagaland interstate border in Karbi Anglong district on Saturday.The fierce exchange of firing took place atop the Rongapahar hills in the afternoon. According to information, a group of miscreants from Nagaland started indiscriminate firing at the policemen guarding the border outpost.The policemen also retaliated with firing. The gunbattle lasted for nearly two hours. The Naga miscreants later were believed to have fled from the spot. There is no report of any casualty in the encounter.      

3 Cong leaders appointed poll observers

AICC has on Saturday appointed three Congress leaders as poll observers for three Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal for the upcoming polls in the state.According to sources, Nazira MLA Debobrata Saikia has been given the charge of Raigarh while his Thowa counterpart Sushanta Buragohain will look after the poll affairs in Maldah constituency.In the same order, the party has appointed Nabajeet Talukdar as the poll observer in Purulia constituency in West Bengal.

Polling ends, eyes fixed on May 16

Voting in Diphu, Silchar and Karimganj ended peacefully. Now the eyes are fixed on May 16 when the counting of votes would take place from 8 in the morning.Barring a few complaints of EVM malfunction, the second phase of polling in the three constituencies were by and large peaceful.The turn out is expected to touch 80 per cent. ULFA diktat on Hindi songs!

Once again the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) has virtually issued diktat on Hindi songs in the bihu functions.In a press statement e-mailed to the media, the ULFA(I) commander in chief has asked the people to avoid the show of outside culture in the bihu function.Notably, the banned insurgent outfit drew lots of criticism from Zubeen Garg for trying to prevent him from performing Hindi songs.

Diphu turn out nears 80pc

The turn out of voters in Diphu Lok Sabha constituency is expected to touch 80 on Saturday.Many voters were seen waiting in long queues in front of a section of polling booth even after the scheduled time.According to the authorities, the real turn out would be available on Sunday after the receipt of all electronic voting machines.Polling officials, posted in the remote areas, are expected to arrive only on Sunday morning. The polling, which began on a brisk note formally ended at 5 in the morning while a section of booths witnessed voting even at 6 in the evening.In the fray are six candidates. Polling disrupted, resumed again

EVM malfunctioning disrupted polling in some booths in the second phase of polling in the Lok Sabha elections in Assam on Saturday.But according to sources, the disruption was temporary.  The things resumed normalcy as soon as the authorities replaced the voting machines.Voting was disrupted in Dima Hasao district, Karbi Anglong district and in parts of the Karimganj Lok sabha constituency.

Diphu polling ends on brisk note

Recording a huge turn out of voters, the polling in Diphu Lok Sabha constituency ended in the afternoon on Saturday.The voting took place at 1006 booths where the fate of 6 candidates is sealed in the electronic voting machines. The turn out was expectedly high---68 per cent.The authorities have identified 54 booths as hyper sensitive along with 233 very sensitive and 412 sensitive. As many as 17 companies of security forces have been deployed in the constituency and helicopter surveillance was conducted since Thursday to monitor the movement of militants.In the fray are six candidates. The main contest will be between Congress’s Biren Singh Engti and the BJP’s Jayram Engleng.

Polling over in Karimganj

Polling is over in Karimganj where over 68 per cent voters exercised their franchise to decide on the fate of 15 candidates.Polling ended at 1,504 booths from 7 in the morning at 5 in the afternoon recording a huge turn out.The authorities have identified 97 as hyper sensitive and 694 as sensitive along with 529 hyper sensitive. The rest are comparatively safe.The contest is triangular. Congress, BJP and AIUDF are equally strong in Karimganj. The two-time sitting Congress MP Lalit Mohan Suklabaidya is pitted against BJP candidate Krishna Das while AIUDF candidate Radheyshyam Biswas is set to get no less vote in the minority pockets.Counting will take place along with the rest of the country...
