India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. 4 killed in bus mishap

At least 4 people were killed and over 20 have been injured when a passenger bus rammed into another bus near Nagaon town on Wednesday.The incident took place in the wee hours on the National Highway 37 at Sonaribari in Samoguri where Jorhat bound bus rammed into another stranded passenger bus on its way to Dimapur.Identified as Arvind Kar, Guljar Hussain, Juhur Ali and Sahabuddin, four persons died on the spot. Police Local residents in large number came out to the rescue of the passengers. Thirteen passengers have been rushed to the Nagaon Civil Hospital where they are undergoing treatment. 

PM coming on April 24

Its final. Prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh is coming to Guwahati on Thursday. According to official sources, Dr Singh who represents Assam in the Rajya Sabha, has a very brief schedule in the capital city. Dr Singh who is shown to have been staying at a rented house in Sarumotoria, is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati airport at 11 in the morning. Then he would straightly leave for Dispur to cast his vote at the Dispur Govt LP school. Then he is scheduled to leave back to New Delhi.

Massive protest in Baska

Over ten thousand people staged dharna in front of Baska Deputy Commissioner's office a day after the attack on Nava Sarania's office in Mussolpur.    The protestors in large number demanded immediate arrest of the miscreants involved in the incident.            They further threatened to intensify the protest if the miscreants in question are not brought.      A four wheeler vehicle and a bike were riddled when unidentified miscreants fired upon Saranias office who is contesting as an independent candidate from Kokrajhar in the Lok Sabha polls with support of non-Bodo people.

CM slams corporation

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that BJP and its prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi have received support from the corporate houses.             Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, Gogoi said that he has not seen corporate houses rolling out red carpet for a political party.               He further called Modi god of destruction and not god of construction.     He said that he has noticed striking similarity between Modi magic and Ajmal's politics of water bottle.

Rhino carcass found in Kaziranga

A full grown rhino is believed to have died a natural death in Kaziranga.     Forest gaurds have recovered the carcass with its horn in Bagori range of the national park on Friday.         The carcass was spotted during a routine round of patrolling duty just at a stone's throw distance from the Dunga forest camp.      Senior forest officials arrived in the spot and confirm it a natural death.

Attack on Hira Sarania camp

Close associates of Hira Sarania had a narrow escape on Thursday when miscreants attacked the camp of the independent.     The incident took place at the Musolpur based camp of the former Ulfa militant in the evening when motorcycle born youths halted in front of the camp and started indiscriminate firing.               Then they managed to vanish from the spot. There is no report of casualty in the attack. Ulfa opposes Sarania

Both pro and anti talk factions have vehemently oppose Naba Sarania who is contesting from Kokrajhar as an independent candidate in the Lok Sabha polls.                In a statement issued on Thursday, the Paresh Barua faction have urged the people not to vote for their former colleague.         The pro talk faction has already expelled him  after the one time hardcore militant filed nomination papers before the Kokrajhar return officer.

Severe storm awaits Assam

A severe hailstorm is waiting to lash the state if the weathermen are to be believed. According to the meterological centre in the outskirt of Guwahati, in all probability. the hailstorm is likely to lash parts of upper Assam apart from touching the central and Northern districts within the next 24 hours.
