India Leads the City Nature Challenge with 206 Cities Participating

New Delhi: India has emerged as the largest participant in the 9th annual City Nature Challenge (CNC), with 206 Indian cities among the 675 global participants. This collaborative citizen science event, running from April 26 to 29, is organized in India by WWF-India to encourage people to document and share images of wild plants, animals, and fungi using the iNaturalist app.

WWF-India is spearheading this initiative across several states, including Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and New Delhi. Neha Raghav, Director of Environment Education at WWF-India, highlighted CNC's importance, saying, "CNC is a great opportunity to engage people of all ages in citizen science."

In Assam, the event kicked off on Earth Day with youth from various colleges and universities conducting BioBlitzes. Participating institutions include Gauhati University and Cotton University. Archita Baruah Bhattacharyya, State Coordinator for WWF-India in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, noted that CNC 2024 has expanded to include the entire North East, with two main cities—Guwahati and Digboi—leading the effort.

Globally, the CNC has seen rapid growth, with the number of participating cities increasing from 450 in 2023 to over 675 in 2024. Last year, CNC saw over 66,000 participants and nearly 1.87 million observations, with Hyderabad emerging as the top Indian city.

To participate in CNC, individuals can find wildlife, take pictures or sound recordings, and upload them to iNaturalist. This collaborative effort not only contributes to scientific research but also raises awareness about biodiversity conservation. Fresh lease of life in NERAMAC

Guwahati: The North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Ltd (NERAMAC) has inducted Manoj Kumar Das in its helms at a time when enterprising fraternity in the northeastern region are having a tough time. Das joined as managing director in the Central Public Sector Enterprise in addition to his current assignment in the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (NEDFi) as Deputy General Manager. Earlier Das served as the Director of Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) Guwahati for close to three and harf years and revived it with several innovative initiatives.  NERAMAC hopes same temperament in Das to be back on tracks.

COVID19 cases 20

Guwahati: The figure of COVID19 cases has reached 20 with 4 more people tested positive on Friday. According state health minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma, of these three from Nalbari while the remaining one is from North Salmara. He said that all patients who have travel history to Nizamuddin in Delhi are now stable.  

Nizamuddin attendees from Assam found in UP

New Delhi: UP police have caught 13 people from Assam in Moradabab who were hiding at a local mosque. According to information, police tracked down  all these 13 people from Assam at a mosque in Barwalan area on Wednesday. According to SP in Moradabad Amit Kumar Anand,  they have been shifted to quarantine for treatment. COVID19 positive goes up to 16

Guwahati: More and more COVID 19 positive cases have been surfacing. Two more people have tested positive in Goal para with travel history to Delhi where they attended the religious congregation at Nizamuddin. Before that health minister confirmed 14 cases in Karimganj,  Jagiroad and Nalbari with the same travel back ground. Alert ~ 3 more #COVID19 positive cases in Goalpara, Assam, taking the total to 16. Nizamuddin Impact: Four more test COVID19 positive

Guwahati: Four more people have tested COVID 19 positive at Guwahati Medical College Hospital on Wednesday taking figure of positive cases to 5. According to state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, GMCH laboratory has confirmed COVID19 positive in Jamaluddin Arshad Ali, Hazarat Ali, Nuruddin and Jonab Ali, who attended the religious function held at Nizamuddin in Delhi in mid March. Sarma said that all those who attended the congragation in the capital city have yet to arrive in thte state. Participators in Nizamuddin event must undergo test

Guwahati: The participating people in the religious function at the Nizamuddin shrine have been figured after the state confirmed the first one COVID19 patient undergoing treatment at the Silchar Medical College Hospital in Delhi. According to information, altogether 299 people attended the function along with 3000 others from the country and abroad on March 13 and 14. First COVID 19 case rattles state

Silchar: Finally,  the state confirmed it's first COVID19 patient with a travel history to Delhi where the cancer patient attended a religious function at Nizamuddin recently. The 55 year old patient from Karimganj was undergoing treatment of cancer at the Silchar Medical College for the last couple of days. Populist measures in the time of lockdown

Guwahati: In a bid to give some sort of respite in the time of nationwide lock down, the Assam government is launching a slew of schemes targeting 72 lakh families in the state. Presided over by CM Sarbananda Sonowal, the meeting resolved provide free rice for 58 lakh families under the National Food Security (NFS) Scheme  from Wednesday. This is in addition to Rs 1000 each to the poor families whom NFS Act has not covered. The meeting allowed the trucks ferrying essentials commodities to enter into the State from Wednesday.
