Sivasagar: Allegations of electoral malpractice have surfaced in Assam after reports emerged that a single individual voted twice under different names during the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections on April 19. The accused, identified as Putu Baruah, is a resident of Amolapatty in Sivasagar.
According to a complaint filed by social activist Ntipan Saikia with the electoral offices in Nazira and Sivasagar, Putu Baruah used two different voter cards to cast ballots in two separate constituencies. The complaint alleges that Baruah voted in Sivasagar under his own name and in Nazira under the name Indreswar Baruah.
The voter card for the Sivasagar constituency shows Putu Baruah as a 77-year-old male, while the card for the Nazira constituency lists Indreswar Baruah, apparently the same person, as a 76-year-old. This discrepancy has raised serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter. Officials from the Election Commission of India have acknowledged the complaint and stated that strict action will be taken if the allegations are proven true. They emphasized the importance of maintaining a fair and transparent electoral process.
"We take these allegations very seriously," said an election official from Sivasagar. "If someone is found to have voted twice or used fraudulent means to influence the election outcome, they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
The incident has prompted calls for greater vigilance and stricter verification processes to prevent electoral fraud. Activists and community leaders in the region have urged the Election Commission to implement more robust measures to ensure that each voter is accurately identified and to maintain public trust in the election process.

Forest officials in Sivasagar district captured a leopard which has been creating a reign of terror at a tea garden area in Geleky. Acting on the complaints of the local residents in the Modi Tea Estate area, the forest officials with the help of a group of people laid a trap where the animal landed on Friday night. Freedom fighter, president of Nazira District Freedom Fighters Association and veteran Congress leader Subha Gogoi breathed his last at his residence at Mazenga on Thursday. Nazira AASU unit staged its dharna on Friday against the spiralling price rise following the hike in VAT against 127 goods. Several parties and organizations staged protests in Sivasagar district on Monday raising a number of issues confronting Assam and its people. Hundreds of activists of the Peoples Council of Peace and Development staged a 4 hour long dharna in front of the DC office demanding an immediate rollback of the move to auction 12 oilfields. Other demands include measures to stop rhino poaching in Kaziranga. Later, they sent a memorandum to the Centre through the Deputy Commissioner outlining their demands. Meanwhile, CPI unit in district also submitted a memorandum before the DC to stall the process to auction the oilfields.
The 12 hour bandh call in protest against the move to auction 12 oil fields heavily hit normal life in Nazira on Tuesday. Called by the Tai Ahom Youva Parishad, the bandh got total response in the entire Nazira sub division where schools and colleges, banks and other public and private institutions remained closed. Many picketers enforced the bandh by burning tyres on the roads apart from shouting slogans against the central and state governments.
Communist Part of India vehemently is opposing the recent move of the central petroleum ministry to privatise 67 oil fields of Oil India and ONGC which includes 17 oil fields from Assam.
