Assam Don Bosco University Celebrates 12th Convocation, Honors Outstanding Graduates

Guwahati, 23 September 2023: Assam Don Bosco University celebrated its 12th Convocation on Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, at Tapesia Campus Sonapur, Guwahati. The esteemed gathering included the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, who graced the occasion as the university's visitor, along with Vice Chancellor Fr. (Dr) Jose Palley, Pro Vice Chancellor Fr. Joseph Nellnatt, Directors of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members, students, and dignitaries from across the country.

Addressing the graduating students, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society, emphasizing the importance of innovation and dedication in shaping a better India. He applauded the successful implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) by the University and acknowledged their efforts in teacher training and curriculum restructuring.

The Hon’ble Chancellor, Fr. Januarius Sangma, urged the graduates to view the world as an open canvas for their aspirations and emphasized the vital role they play in the nation's future, linking it to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Fr. (Dr) Jose Palely, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to embrace change, maintain passion for their pursuits, and uphold the values instilled during their academic journey.

A total of 1286 students were conferred degrees, with 555 receiving bachelor's degrees and 731 receiving master’s degrees across various disciplines. Additionally, 23 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees. The Global Online and Distance Education Programme saw 134 students receive degrees and 6 students obtain diplomas, attracting participants from around the world.

Notably, 36 outstanding graduates were awarded gold medals for their exemplary academic performance. The Chancellor’s and Vice Chancellor’s medals were presented to the top graduates in postgraduate and undergraduate courses, respectively. Special awards, including the ‘Father Stephen Mavely Gold Medal’ and ‘Shri JN Bawri Memorial Medal of Distinction’, were introduced, recognizing exceptional talent and commitment in academics, social roles, and extracurricular activities.

The convocation culminated with the closure announced by the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, followed by the National Anthem, marking a momentous conclusion to Convocation 2023.

1 killed in road mishap

One person was killed and three others have been injured when a vehicle hit the post of a bridge in Morigaon district on Saturday night.The incident took place at Dharamtul on the National Highway No 37 when the vehicle carrying four people to Jajori in Nagaon met with the mishap. One person died on the spot while three others were rushed to the hospital.  

WB gets top KLO militants

The West Bengal police have arrested two top KLO militants hours after they were released by their Nepal counterparts on Friday.Identified as Tom Adhikary and Niambor Rajbanshi, the KLO militants would be produced before a court on Sunday. They were captured along the Indo-Nepal border on February 4.

Poaching revisits Kaziranga

Despite strict vigil, rhino poaching refuses to die down in Kaziranga triggering unending protest alleging failure of the authorities.One more full grown rhino felt in to the hands of poachers on Saturday. The incident took place at Kohora range where poachers killed an one horn animal.The carcass was found and its horn was missing. The forest guards came to hear the sound of gunfiring in the range. Narrow escape for 250 IITians

At least 250 IITians had a narrow escape when the ferry carrying them struck on the river Brahmaputra on Saturday.According to reports, the ferry which brought them back to North Guwahati from a picnic spot suddenly struck at sand in the middle of the mighty river. The wind that blew in the afternoon compounded the problem.It needed the rescue team and the ferry men three hours to bail out the IIT students from the jaws of death.           

Jorhat lady lawyer arrested

In a yet another incident that strikes the attention of the state’s legal fraternity, a lady lawyer has been sent to police custody for allegedly misbehaving with a judicial magistrate in Jorhat district on Saturday.It took place in Titabor in the morning when the sub divisional judicial magistrate ordered arrest of a lady lawyer alleging that she misbehaved with him as she conducted a case of bail petition.After heated arguments, the magistrate issued an arrest warrant against the lawyer alleging misbeviour and disturbing in the functionings.
