Assam Don Bosco University Celebrates 12th Convocation, Honors Outstanding Graduates

Guwahati, 23 September 2023: Assam Don Bosco University celebrated its 12th Convocation on Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, at Tapesia Campus Sonapur, Guwahati. The esteemed gathering included the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, who graced the occasion as the university's visitor, along with Vice Chancellor Fr. (Dr) Jose Palley, Pro Vice Chancellor Fr. Joseph Nellnatt, Directors of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members, students, and dignitaries from across the country.

Addressing the graduating students, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society, emphasizing the importance of innovation and dedication in shaping a better India. He applauded the successful implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) by the University and acknowledged their efforts in teacher training and curriculum restructuring.

The Hon’ble Chancellor, Fr. Januarius Sangma, urged the graduates to view the world as an open canvas for their aspirations and emphasized the vital role they play in the nation's future, linking it to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Fr. (Dr) Jose Palely, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to embrace change, maintain passion for their pursuits, and uphold the values instilled during their academic journey.

A total of 1286 students were conferred degrees, with 555 receiving bachelor's degrees and 731 receiving master’s degrees across various disciplines. Additionally, 23 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees. The Global Online and Distance Education Programme saw 134 students receive degrees and 6 students obtain diplomas, attracting participants from around the world.

Notably, 36 outstanding graduates were awarded gold medals for their exemplary academic performance. The Chancellor’s and Vice Chancellor’s medals were presented to the top graduates in postgraduate and undergraduate courses, respectively. Special awards, including the ‘Father Stephen Mavely Gold Medal’ and ‘Shri JN Bawri Memorial Medal of Distinction’, were introduced, recognizing exceptional talent and commitment in academics, social roles, and extracurricular activities.

The convocation culminated with the closure announced by the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, followed by the National Anthem, marking a momentous conclusion to Convocation 2023.

The ministerial group set up to study the formation of new districts and sub division discussed the entire subject at a meeting in Dispur on Friday.The meeting thoroughly discussed the proposals for creation of ten new districts and 46 sub divisions in the state.   

The great escape

A hostage managed to escape from the NDFB-S camp in Bhutan 19 days after he was kidnapped from Kokrajhar.According to information, the local resident of Lilabari in Lakhimpur was kidnapped on February 5 when he was on a visit to Kokrajhar with one of him friend.After holding him hostage, the Bodo militant outfit demanded Rs 1 crore for his release. The family members, however, could not pay the ransom. But under mysterious circumstances, he managed to escape from the captivity.   

Silchar ready to receive Modi

Silchar turns into a security fortress a day before Narendra Modi’s huge rally.Top police officials along with their Gujarat counterparts are constantly monitoring the massive arrangements for the rally where the state BJP pins hopes on presence of over 2 lakh people.Maximum security forces are guarding the rally site beside the ISBT where the BJP prime ministerial candidate is scheduled to address the rally.The Gujarat Chief Minister is scheduled to land in Dibrugarh at 11 in the morning. Then he would leave for Pasigaht in Arunachal Pradesh to address a rally.He would attend the rally in Silchar at 1-30 in the afternoon.

Three dreaded GNLA militants were killed at an encounter with security forces in Goalpara district on Friday.The encounter took place at Krishnai along the Assam-Meghalaya border where the trio were killed on the spot. Security forces are fanning in and around the area in search of the Garo militants who have been spreading terror tentacles in the entire area in the form of extortion and abduction.

Leopard in cage

A full grown leopard was captured in Guwahati after it unleashed a reign of terror in Kahilipara for the last couple of days.The leopard was captured at a cage in Kahilipara as it tried to get a goat put inside it on Thursday night. Forest officials reached the spot on Friday morning and took it to the zoo. 

Rs 6 lakh looted in Guwahati

Despite round the clock vigil, Guwahati city is still a den of thieves and robbers.Two motorcycle born youths looted Rs 6 lakh from a businessmen on Tuesday forcing police operation in search of the dacoits.The incident took place at West Guwahati where the armed youths snatched his bag containing Rs 6 lakh on his way back to home in the evening.    

NHPC trailer in Nagaon

The huge trailer carrying equipment for big dams in Gerukamukh has halted for the day in Nagaon on Tuesday.Amid tight security, the trailer entered into the NHPC godwoon in the afternoon in the face of stiff protest by KMSS. The trailer crossed Guwahati on Monday night.
