Assam Don Bosco University Celebrates 12th Convocation, Honors Outstanding Graduates

Guwahati, 23 September 2023: Assam Don Bosco University celebrated its 12th Convocation on Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, at Tapesia Campus Sonapur, Guwahati. The esteemed gathering included the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, who graced the occasion as the university's visitor, along with Vice Chancellor Fr. (Dr) Jose Palley, Pro Vice Chancellor Fr. Joseph Nellnatt, Directors of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members, students, and dignitaries from across the country.

Addressing the graduating students, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society, emphasizing the importance of innovation and dedication in shaping a better India. He applauded the successful implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) by the University and acknowledged their efforts in teacher training and curriculum restructuring.

The Hon’ble Chancellor, Fr. Januarius Sangma, urged the graduates to view the world as an open canvas for their aspirations and emphasized the vital role they play in the nation's future, linking it to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Fr. (Dr) Jose Palely, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to embrace change, maintain passion for their pursuits, and uphold the values instilled during their academic journey.

A total of 1286 students were conferred degrees, with 555 receiving bachelor's degrees and 731 receiving master’s degrees across various disciplines. Additionally, 23 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees. The Global Online and Distance Education Programme saw 134 students receive degrees and 6 students obtain diplomas, attracting participants from around the world.

Notably, 36 outstanding graduates were awarded gold medals for their exemplary academic performance. The Chancellor’s and Vice Chancellor’s medals were presented to the top graduates in postgraduate and undergraduate courses, respectively. Special awards, including the ‘Father Stephen Mavely Gold Medal’ and ‘Shri JN Bawri Memorial Medal of Distinction’, were introduced, recognizing exceptional talent and commitment in academics, social roles, and extracurricular activities.

The convocation culminated with the closure announced by the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, followed by the National Anthem, marking a momentous conclusion to Convocation 2023.

Several KMSS activists sustained injury in Golaghat when police sprang upon to them for blocking roads demanding immediate release of Akhil Gogoi.The incident took place at Alichiga when police tried to disperse the KMSS activists who blocked a vital road.Police even resorted to blank firing when a section of the allegedly protestors turned violent and damaged a number of vehicles on the road.

The state is all set to go to the Lok Sabha polls in three phases.This was disclosed at a press conference by Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath on Wednesday.He said that the first phase will take place in Tezpur, Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Kaliabor, Jorhat and Lakhimpur.The second phase of polling slated for April 12 comprises Karimganj, Silchar and Diphu. The third and final phase of polling will take place on April 24 in Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Barpeta and Dhubri.The counting would take place on May 16.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has made some more announcement on Wednesday hours before Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath announced the poll schedule.Gogoi announced land pattas for more people apart from extending the qualified age for state government service from 35 to 40 years of age for the general category candidates.
Police are all set to produce Akhil Gogoi before court on Wednesday four days after he was arrested in connection with the recent self immolation of a KMSS activist.According to sources, police will seek extension of Gogoi’s remand for two or three more days.Gogoi along with five others would be produce before the court in the afternoon.
The Election Commission is all set to announce its Lok Sabha poll schedule on Wednesday.According to sources, first phase of the general election is slated for April 7. The entire exercise will be conducted in seven phase.The Commission is expected to hold the Lok Sabha phase in Assam in two phases from April 7. The model code of conduct will also come into force from Wednesday.
