Assam Don Bosco University Celebrates 12th Convocation, Honors Outstanding Graduates

Guwahati, 23 September 2023: Assam Don Bosco University celebrated its 12th Convocation on Saturday, 23rd September, 2023, at Tapesia Campus Sonapur, Guwahati. The esteemed gathering included the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, who graced the occasion as the university's visitor, along with Vice Chancellor Fr. (Dr) Jose Palley, Pro Vice Chancellor Fr. Joseph Nellnatt, Directors of Schools, Heads of Departments, faculty members, students, and dignitaries from across the country.

Addressing the graduating students, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society, emphasizing the importance of innovation and dedication in shaping a better India. He applauded the successful implementation of the New Education Policy 2020 (NEP) by the University and acknowledged their efforts in teacher training and curriculum restructuring.

The Hon’ble Chancellor, Fr. Januarius Sangma, urged the graduates to view the world as an open canvas for their aspirations and emphasized the vital role they play in the nation's future, linking it to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

In his welcome address, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Fr. (Dr) Jose Palely, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to embrace change, maintain passion for their pursuits, and uphold the values instilled during their academic journey.

A total of 1286 students were conferred degrees, with 555 receiving bachelor's degrees and 731 receiving master’s degrees across various disciplines. Additionally, 23 scholars were awarded doctoral degrees. The Global Online and Distance Education Programme saw 134 students receive degrees and 6 students obtain diplomas, attracting participants from around the world.

Notably, 36 outstanding graduates were awarded gold medals for their exemplary academic performance. The Chancellor’s and Vice Chancellor’s medals were presented to the top graduates in postgraduate and undergraduate courses, respectively. Special awards, including the ‘Father Stephen Mavely Gold Medal’ and ‘Shri JN Bawri Memorial Medal of Distinction’, were introduced, recognizing exceptional talent and commitment in academics, social roles, and extracurricular activities.

The convocation culminated with the closure announced by the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, followed by the National Anthem, marking a momentous conclusion to Convocation 2023.

Security forces have rescued two abducted ONGC officials from Nagaland last night.  Sources revealed that the officials were rescued in a joint operation carried out by the Indian Army and Assam Rifles in a populas area of the Mon district. The outlawed ULFA(I) has kidnapped three ONGC officials from the Lakuwa rig. Among the three two were rescued, security forces claimed. The rescued officials are identified as Alakesh Saikia and Moni Mohan Gogoi. Security Forces also recovered an AK 47 rifle during the operation.   Amidst the Coronavirus scare, a group of armed people has, reportedly, abducted three ONGC officials from its oil rig in Lakuwa, Sivasagar last night. As per reports, the abducted have been identified as Ritul Saikia, Titabor, Mohini Mohan Gogoi, Sivasagar and Alakesh Saikia of Jorhat. After receiving the information, the police have launched investigation.  Mentionable is that the ULFA(I) abducted two officials of an oil company a few months earlier and released them just a few days ago.
Former Chief Minister of Assam and senior Congress leader Dr. Bhumidhar Barman is no more. He was 91. The octogenarian political leader passed away today evening after a brief illness. He was also former health minister during the chief ministership of late Hiteswar Saikia from 1991 to 1996. After the demise of Saikia, Dr. Barman was elavated as the chief minister of the state for a brief while.
The Centre is likely to restore the employees' Dearness Allowances(DA) effective from July, this year. The government had decided to not dole out the Allowances after the onslaught of the new coronavirus and the subsequent prolonged lock-down imposed to contain the meance in the country  However, as its earlier decision the government, reportedly, mulled to restore the DA, which would benefit lakhs of its empolyees. On March this year, the government informed in the Parliament that the Central government employess' would receive the upcoming July DA. If it happens, the DA of the Central Government employees would leap to 28 percent from the current 17 percent.

Guwahati : The United Liberation Front of Something has released Ram Kumar four months after they kidnapped the private oil exploration firm in Arunachal Pradesh. Kumar was released at an undisclosed location along the Indo-Myanmar border in Nagaland on Monday wee hours.  Kumar was kidnapped along with Pranab Kumar Gogoi on December 21,2021 whom they freed on Saturday.  ULFA-I took the duo to their captivity claiming Rs 20 crore and in February the insurgents threatened to kill Kumar and Gogoi for failing to meet the demand. But they suspended the extreme step under the mounting pressure from all sides.
Guwahati : The heat and dust of the electioneering for the final phase of Assam Assembly polls have ended on Sunday. Union home minister Amit Shah held a rally in Sorbhog in the morning and left two others unattended in Bhawanipur and Jalukbari following the insurgent attack on central police forces in Jharkhand early morning. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal attended a huge rally in Jalukbari on behalf of Himanta Biswa Sarma in the afternoon.
