Passengers stabbed in train

In a bizarre incident, the Army jawans stabbed two passengers inside a train as they protested against defence personnel occupying all seats at the Rangia railway station on Thursday. DGP in Kokrajhar

DGP Khagen Sarma is on a stock-taking visit to Kokrajhar on Thursday.Sarma held a high level meeting at the Circuit House in Kokrajhar with the BTAD’s top police officials. He further asked police and para military forces to intensify counter offensive against NDFB, KLO and ULFA.The review of the law and order situation assumes significance three days after suspected NDFB-S militants kidnapped a businessman from Chirang district.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is confident of comfortable victory of Bhubneswar Kalita, Dr Sanjay Sinh and Biswajeet Daimary.Talking to reporters in Dispur on Thursday, Gogoi said that the voters practically are expected to clear their positions towards the evening.

AGP trying to reach TMC

The Opposition camp is trying to rope in the Trinamool Congress MLA to garner his support to Hiador Hussain.Party sources told Assam Times that AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is trying to woo Dwipen Pathak. But there is no assurance.

Economic blockade called off

The indefinite economic blockade against Arunachal Pradesh has been called off. But it is likely to resume next months if the government fails to deliver the goods.The decision was taken after a delegation of the protestors held a meeting with the Sonitpur district administration who assured them that steps the victims would get justice. The district administration further appraised the protestors of steps to address their grievances.

Paralyzing bandh

Normal life came to a grinding halt in parts of lower Assam following the KLO-sponsored bandh called in protest against the killing of Brindabon Rajbanshi in fake encounter.    Vital roads wore a deserted look, shops and markets, schools and colleges, banks and offices remained closed from early in the morning on Thursday.Security forces claimed to have killed the KLO top leader in an encounter. But the Koch Rajbanshi militant outfit alleged it an encounter.

Cong-BPF MLAs to meet again

Congress and BPF legislators met on Wednesday to discuss the Rajya Sabha poll proceedings. But the meet remained inconclusive.Chaired by chief minister Tarun Gogoi in presence of APCC president and party candidate Bhubneswar Kalita, the discussion remained incomplete. They are scheduled to meet again on Thursday morning.The meeting was scheduled to discuss the preference of candidate. But it was left for Thursday’s meeting at the Assam Assembly secretariat.

Stock-taking visit

Home ministry’s joint secretary Sambhu Singh is on a two days stock-taking visit to the state in the wake of the Bihali incident where Arunachal Pradesh miscreants killed 11 villagers in Sonitpur district last week.Singh on Wednesday held a high level meeting with DGP Khagen Sarma at the Assam Police headquarters in the afternoon, who apprised him of the overall law and order situation.  He is scheduled to hold more meeting with civil and police officials on Thursday in Dispur.
