Collective approach for women’s upliftment emphasized

Imphal: A two-day interactive seminar on women’s rights and liberties in Manipur was a refreshing experience for the participants. Organized jointly by National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi (NHRC) and Manipur University at Imphal on 18-19 May 2018, the seminar titled ‘Women Empowerment & Human Rights: Special reference to North-East’ witnessed the participation of a number of women rights activists, research scholars, journalists and interested students.

Various speakers pointed out that the women in northeast India be it Khasi, Meitei, Assamese, Naga etc enjoy traditional liberties in the society. Comparatively they are in a better position than their counterparts in the mainland. However, increasing incidents of crimes against women, domestic violence, dowry episodes etc in the region emerged as a matter of serious concern to the participants. Prof Adya Prasad Pandey, vice-chancellor of Manipur University presided over the inaugural function, where NHRC joint-director Dr Muni Dev Singh Tyagi, its assistant director Dr SK Shukla, member Jyotika Kalra and MU professor N Lokendra Singh were present on the dais.

Arguing that if a woman is empowered, the entire family gets empowered, Prof Pandey stated that with proper empowerment policies their status could be enhanced. He mentioned about the Ima Keithels (mother’s markets) of Manipur, where the ladies run their business and also manages the market as a whole.

Various technical sessions were addressed by distinguished speakers including Dr Anuja S from Bengaluru, Hasina Kharbhih from Shillong, Dr Joram Anaya Tana from Arunachal Pradesh, Prof H Subodani Devi from Imphal etc, where over 25 papers were presented in the seminar. Three senior journalists from eastern India namely Snehashish Sur from Kolkata, Pradip Phanjoubam from Imphal and Nava Thakuria from Guwahati also contributed in a session highlighting the role of media in the process of women’s empowerment.

Addressing the valedictory function, Justice N Kotiswar Singh of Manipur High Court emphasized on a collective initiative over the process of empowering women in the vast country. Appreciating the NHRC team for organizing the seminar, where the participants brainstormed for two days, Justice Singh expressed hope that new ideas would be generated, developed and nurtured with the interactions.

IMPHAL: The Manipur Legislative Assembly has elected Kongkham Robindro Singh as Deputy Speaker by a voice vote in the ingoing budget session on Thursday. The election was conducted in the Assembly Secretariat where Congress candidate Fazur Rahim was defeated in the voice vote.   The 30-year-old Robindro Singh has become the youngest Deputy Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly. IMPHAL, Jan 20 (NENA): A few new species of migratory birds were found flocking at Loktak Lake during this year’s bird count, but the exact number of birds is yet to be known officially as of now. A total of 250 volunteers were used during Saturday's bird count conducted at 50 different spots of the lake, jointly conducted by the Wild Life Wing, Manipur Forest Department and Indian Bird Conservation Network with the help of various organisations. All old petrol and diesel vehicles in the country are set to convert to all-electric vehicles by installing kits by 2020. This was informed to the media by senior scientist Robindro Lairenlakpam from the Indian Institute of Petroleum Council of Scientific and Industrial Research at the Press Club here on Tuesday. He said the plan would be completed by 2020 during which 60-70 lakh old vehicles are to be converted to electric-vehicles. Robindro also informed that this plan is being taken up under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.  The Centre has already declared that India will sell only electric vehicles by 2030.

 Drugs worth Rs 3 crore were intercepted here on Saturday by police and arrested a man in connection with the incident. Police said 72,000 pieces of WY tablets and 286 gm of heroin were uncovered from a sand-loaded mini truck around noon. They identified the drug peddler as Nongmaithem Ranjit, 56, son of Dolanjao of Nambol Heikrujam Nongmaithem Leikai within Bishnupur district. The drug haul could have fetched more than Rs 3 crore if it had been allowed to hit the streets. In a move to fend off illegal immigration to Manipur, special police teams have been deployed in border areas of the state, in the wake of publication of National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft in Assam. The Manipur government has taken up stringent measures in border areas to shut out entry of illegal immigrants. In Assam, the first NRC draft was released on December 31. IMPHAL, Jan 3 (NENA): One cyclist was mowed down and three others were injured in a hit-and-run car accident last night, hitting one person after another in Imphal East’s Hatta and NRL pump at Khurai.   The deceased identified as Thangjam Paka, 56, resident of Khurai Thangjam Leikai, died near Khurai NRL pump after the Santro car hit and dragged him along the road about 100 ft. Prior to the fatal incident, the same car hit a pedestrian in front of Hatta Public Hospital and another person who was driving Honda Activa scooter and pedestrian who were injured.
