AGP reunified at Golaghat

14th October 2008, this day will remain a red letter day in Assam’s political scenario as all the breakaway fractions of Asom Gana Parishad, the largest regional party in Assam, makes formal unification. From 5:30 am in the morning supporters of the regional party from all over the state started to gather in Bhrigu Kumar Phukan Khetra at Golaghat. The whole Golaghat town was bathed in the tri colour of the AGP flag. For AGP, life comes to a full circle as AGP was formed on 14th October 1985 at Golaghat and after long 23 years AGP held their unification ceremony at their very birth place.

The rally started with the felicitation ceremony of the families of martyrs of Assam movement. After that Mr. Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya delivered the welcome speech. Mr. Chandra Mohan Patowary, President, AGP addressing a gathering of around fifteen thousand people, said that today was a historical day in the history of regional politics of Assam and he apologize to the people of Assam for all the wrongs they have committed knowingly or unknowingly and also took a pledge that it would not be repeated again and the united AGP will never be bound to organize an unification rally in the future. In a sentimental address Patowary stressed that the AGP have no high command than the people of Assam and their verdict will be considered as the ultimate decision by the party. Concluding his speech Patowary strongly evoke the people of Assam to stands together in order to resist the Congress(I) and usher in a new era of regional politics. The meeting took a momentous turn when Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, the most influential figure of regional politics joined hand with the new united AGP and his home coming was loudly cheered by everybody present at the gathering. The rally also witnessed the second coming of former heavy weights of AGP like Atul Bora, Pulokesh Baruah, Rekha Rani Das Boro, Biraj Sarma, Gunin Hazarika etc.
