Heaping praise on Pabitra Kr Deka

GUWAHATI: Pabitra Kumar Deka's name is forever etched in the state's cultural scenario. From making writings on cinema or theatre an integral part of journalism in this part of the world, particularly in the vernacular media, to publishing the pioneering cultural magazine 'Roopkar' or instituting the first film awards in Assam way back in 1975, the Roopkar Awards, he broke new ground with each of his enterprise. Before he channelled his energy and activities towards cine-journalism and script-writing, before he became an immensely respected name in the cultural world, he was once a leader of the people's cultural movement, a leftist activist, famous satirical litterateur, editor, drama critic, prolific writer of essays and compositions, director of TV serials and documentaries, etc. He attracted much praise and appreciation with his prolific writings in the pages of yesteryear magazines like 'Samakalin', 'Naksha', 'Asomiya Kabita', 'Amar Pratinidhi', 'Roopkar' among many others which brought a great deal of pleasure to an adoring following.

 

            Some of his most well-known novels are 'Hu-Chi Minor Kabita', 'Saudor Sadhu', 'Ajon Biror Sadhu', 'Mulla Naseeruddinor Galpa', 'Dhananjoyor Diary', 'Mora Manuh Bosabor Upai', 'Hanumanor Sadhu', 'Rashalaap', 'Nirbasita Koutuk', 'Byakul Kamona', 'Bhabendra Nath Saikiar Chalaschitra', 'Asomiya Chalaschitrar Geet', 'Satuta Dashakar Asomiya Chalaschitra' (a mini encyclopedia on Asomiya cinema), 'Bharatiya Samantaral Dharar Chhobi', 'Biswa Chalaschitra', etc. His pioneering production house 'Aikyatan' staged plays like Maxim Gorky's 'Maa', 'Dhanoni', 'Akonir Suwani Desh', 'Aahotgurir Natun Baat', 'Janani', 'Panchatantra', 'Moi Koboror Pora Koisu', 'Natak Holeu Natak Nohoi', 'Deep', 'Hewers of Coal', 'The Night of 16th January', etc, among others.

            Deka defined the cultural movement and contributed to it at every juncture. Quite naturally, the intellectual and cultural legacy he has left behind is enormous. One of his most outstanding accomplishments was his realization of the historic value of every published article, book or photograph related to cinema. The archive he has left behind is a priceless repository of information and artifact of Assamese cinema and a heritage which needed serious conservation effort.

 

            Finally, the wait is over. The Pabitra Kumar Deka Archive - a first of its kind, was declared open by the Chief Guest Kanak Sen Deka, eminent litterateur, former president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha and editor of Assamese daily Dainik Agradoot, in a sombre function held to mark the death anniversary of Pabitra Kumar Deka, at his Pub-Sarania residence, Guwahati, on January 5. In his speech, Kanak Sen Deka referred to late Deka as an institution, a writer of great stature, who made immense contribution towards the literary and cultural field, adding that the archive would be of much help for research among the new generation. The archive comprises of books, magazines and periodicals on films, still photographs, cassettes, CDs, VCDs, which have been systematically preserved.

            In the same event, the Roopkar Awards were presented to four noted personalities for four consecutive years from 2013 to 2016. Veteran actor-director Kulada Kumar Bhattacharya presented the awards. The awardees are Munin Barua (director/playwright for 2013), Arunlochan Das (film journalist for 2014), Sashi Phukan (Publisher-editor of the magazine 'Bismoi' for 2015), Nayan Prasad (actor-drama director-film critic for 2016). Awardee Munin Barua could not attend due to illness and the same was received by his son Manas Barua.

 

            The programme, anchored by cine-journalist Bidyut Kumar Bhuyan, was graced by a number of noted personalities from the film and media industry, besides educationists, film enthusiasts among others, including Dilip Chandan, Achyut Kumar Patowary, Kopil Bora, Bobbeta Sharma, Sanjeev Hazorika, Udayaditya Bharali, Kishore Giri, Jitumoni Bora, Hemanta Kumar Das, Mrinal Das, Nabanita Sarma Bora etc.

Victory for Congress, BPF

The suspense is over. Its victory for Bhubneswar Kalita, Dr Sanjay Sinh and Biswajeet Daimary in the Rajya Sabha polls on Friday.Congress candidates Bhuneswar Kalita and Dr Singh got 32 votes each while the alliance BPF candidate got 29 votes. Haidor Hussain had to remain satisfied with 26 votes.In a major setback for the Opposition camp, six votes stood cancelled. This has become a staggering blow for the prospect of the Opposition consensus candidate.       Barring Ataur Rahman Majarbhuyan, all legislators have exercised their franchise for the three seats in the Upper House.

KMSS targets Majarbhuyan

Hundreds of KMSS activists in Silchar staged protest in protest against the absence of Katigarh MLA Ataur Rahman Majarbhuyan in the Rajya Sabha polling on Friday which paved the way for easy win for Congress and BPF candidates.Shouting slogans against the MLA the protestors warned him of dire consequences in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and in the next assembly polls.Later police rushed to the spot and disperse the protestors.

Crucial AGP meet at 7 PM

The Asom Gana Parishad steering committee is all set to meet in Guwahati on Friday afternoon to discuss the post-Rajya Sabha poll situation.Reliable sources told Assam Times that the crucial meeting is likely to clear stern action against Padma Hazarika whose vote is likely to stand cancelled.The party legislator from Sotea placed tick mark instead of the prescribed number in the ballot paper. The polling observer’s statement would be considered in this meeting. The mistake is a setback for the Opposition consensus candidate Haidor Hussain.   

RS polling ends; eye on results

Barring Ataur Rahman Majarbhuyan, all legislators have exercised their franchise for the three seats in the Rajya Sabha polls a few hours before the closing time. The AIUDF legislator who is a visit to Saudi Arabia has hardly any chance of arrival in Guwahati to vote in the Rajya Sabha polling before the closing time.According to information, two Congress candidates along with the BPF candidate are likely to win. The ruling Congress managed smooth sailing of two candidates with their own strength while the BPF candidate is set to win with the votes from Congress, BPF, independent candidates.The Opposition candidate Haidor Hussain received the first setback when the AIUDF candidate...

Polling nearing end

Over 95 per cent legislators exercised their franchise in the Rajya Sabha polls in Dispur for three seats in the Upper House on Friday.Despite shortage of votes for Haidor Hussain, the vote of an AGP legislator is likely to be cancelled. According to information, Sotea MLA Padma Hazarika gave a tick mark in favour of the Opposition consensus candidate which is not allowed by the laid down guidelines.Independent MLA Hitesh Basumatary exercise his franchise in favour of BPF candidate. Barring a three or four, all legislators have casted their votes.  

Mali, Pathak favour BPF

Independent candidate Jatin Mali and his Trinamool Congress MLA Dwipen Pathok have casted his vote in the Rajya Sabha polls which are believed to have gone in favour of the BPF candidate Biswajeet Daimary.Mali cleared his position earlier. But Pathak kept everyone on guessing.  

Majarbhuyan draws wrath

Various parties and organizations seem to have upped ante on Ataur Rahman Majarbhuyan for his attempt to shy away from voting in the Rajya Sabha polls on Friday.As the news of his decision spread like wildfire, hundreds of people in his constituency came to the streets and burnt his effigy for refusing to toe on the party line.KMSS activists are fully prepared to stage dharna in front of his residence in Dispur and Katigarh in protest against his decision to avoid the poll.The MLA left for Saudi Arabia for haj and that’s why, he apprised the party leadership of his inability to arrive Guwahati in time. Then the party decided stern action against him as soon as he arrives.

75% MLAs cast votes

Over 75 per cent legislators have cast their votes in Dispur for three Rajya Sabha seats.Chief minister Tarun Gogoi casted his vote. Congress legislator Sarat Borkotiky cast the first party vote while his AGP counterpart Keshab Mahanta was to first to cast the vote from the Opposition consensus candidate.All BPF legislators are believed to have cast their votes.   Giving a new twist to the ongoing Rajya Sabha poll on Friday, AIUDF has informed that its legislator Ataur Rahman Majarbhuyan will be available in Guwahati to cast his vote. But top sources denied the chance.  

RS polling in progress

The polling for three Rajya Sabha seats is going on amid speculations of Congress victory. Legislators are making a queue at the voting room to cast their votes.The polling began at the Assam Assembly at 9 in the morning in presence of the leaders of all political parties. Congress candidate Bhubneswar Kalita, BPF candidate Biswajeet Daimry and Opposition consensus candidate Haidor Hussain are present in the polling office premises.The polling is set to continue till 4 in the afternoon. The results would be available at 5 in the evening after the seal of approval from the Election Commission.The polling is required to fill up the three vacancies following the end of the terms for Bhubneswar...

Majarbhuyan coming!

Giving a new twist to the ongoing Rajya Sabha poll on Friday, AIUDF has informed that its legislator Ataur Rahman Majarbhuyan will be available in Guwahati to cast his vote.AIUDF leaders told Assam Times that the legislator from Katigarh who is on the way to Mumbai from Abu Dhabi is arriving in the city in the afternoon.His vote is most crucial to help Opposition consensus candidate Haidor Hussain win. Majarbhuyan told his PA over telephone on Thursday that he won’t be able to cast his vote in time. This was what gave Congress and BPF a sigh of relief.
