GUWAHATI: Only a day is left for Magh Bihu, the much vaunted annual harvest festival in Assam. People of all walks of life are gearingn to celebrate the occasion with traditional pomp and zeal frm Saturday.
Folks are busy with the erecting Bhelaghar, a make shift house of bamboo and straw for community feasting and merry making on Saturday night.
Shops and markets in urban and semi urban areas are teeming with the people for last minute shopping.
In the rural areas, the women folks are busy with preparing traditional Assamese sweets and pastries to be served their near and dear ones on the occasion.
People in many areas are locked in an undeclared competition with the Bhela Ghars. “If the people of a tiny place in Nagaon are erecting the Parlaiment House with bamboo and straw a group of villagers in Dhemaji are busy in building the historic Kareng Ghar. That’s the comptition,” Subal Das, a retired school teacher said in Jorhat.
A Supreme Court instruction has forced the people of Aahotguri in Nagaon to shy away from organizing the traditional buffalo fight much to the disappointment of lakhs of people across the state.
Same it is in the caseof the native villagers in Hajo, a pilgrimes site in Kamrup district, nearly 20 KM away from the city of Guwahati.

Flood waters are wreaking havoc in many parts of upper Assam districts throwing normal life out of gear. The river Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing above the danger level following the heavy downpour in the catchment areas in the neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh. Many parts Jorhat districts have come under the surging waters of the river Bhugdoi. The flood waters of the Teok river have shown some let up sign on Wednesday. In Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts, most of the rivers are flowing above the danger level where flood waters have damaged crops in several hectares of land.
Officials of GMDA, GMC and water resources departments are carrying out eviction drive for the fourth consecutive day in Guwahati on Wednesday. Led by executive magistrates, the specially setup teams has been demolishing illegal huts and big buildings in the wetlands and hill tops to make the entire city free of encroachments. Talking to Assam Times, Kamrup(metro) district administration officials made it clear that the eviction drive would not halt till the city is made free from encroachments. A section of the residents welcomed the move while some others opposed it saying that the poor lots are the victims.

A simultaneous drive to evict the illegal settlers in the Guwahati hilltops is underway. Teams comprising executive magistrates, GMDA, GMC and water resources development department officials are carrying out the drive from Monday morning. The eviction drive began from Bhangagarh area where hundreds of huts were dismentled evoking sharp reaction from many sections of the people.
There is forecast of more rainfall to add to the flood woes in Guwahati. According to the Guwahati meteorological centre, heavy rains would lash Guwahati during the last 12 hours. Heavy downpour accompanied by thunderstorm is likely to hit the premier north eastern city now caught in massive water logging in many areas.
