Rakesh Paul to move SC with bail plea

GUWAHATI: Amid the crucial probe into the APSC scam, the Gauhati High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail petition moved by chairman Rakesh Paul who has been languishing in jail for the last several months.

A disappointed Paul and his legal team now has no option to pin hopes on the Supreme Court for respite. His lawyers, sources, say are moving the apex court challenging the ruling on Tuesday.

A division bench of the court ruled that since the probe into the nefarious cash for job scam has reached a crucial stage, the bail is not advisable for the chairman.

Paul who two months back procured bail from the Supreme Court was rearrested acting on a fresh bribery case registered against him in Bhangagarh police outpost.

Sources told Assam Times that Paul is moving the country's apex court challenging the High Court's ruling on Tuesday.

Guwahati police on Friday afternoon brought the four accused in the Azara case to the Panbazar police to intensify the  probe into it.     They were brought to the police station after a priliminary medical. Marathon interrogation is going on. All of them would be produced before the chief judicial magistrate seeking police remand. According to source, the accused confessed to have gangraped the two girls at a house on October 22.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi will ensure speedy probe into the Azara case to be tried in the fast track court. Talking to reporters in Delhi on Friday, Gogoi said that he would ask the authority to expedite the probe into the case where two girls were gangraped before being killed in Azara. Gogoi said that he would arrive in Guwahati to keep the process on track. Before that Gogoi held a crucial meeting with ministers Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Akon Bora and Rockybul Hussain at the Assam Bhawan in Delhi.

Violent protest broke out in Azara as the angry local residents on Friday clashed with policemen who resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob. As policemen started beating up the people, a section of the protesters pelted stones at the policemen. The protestors alleged that the police have been trying to call it an accident. A section of media people has been injured in the violent protest.
Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday accused of running nefarious cartel of meat, fish and onion across the state.               Talking to reporters in Guwahati, state unit president Sarbananda Sonowal said that the Congress government has been patronizing the cartel. Tension prevails in Azara after police recovered two bodies of unidentified girls from J ogipara who were raped and murdered on October 22 midnight. The situation started simmering as soon police tried to justify it a case of car accident. Local residents in large number refused to leave the police station premise alleging that the police officials are taking the side of the culprits. Two person were killed and two others have been injured in a road mishap in Jorhat district on Friday. The mishap took place early in the morning on the National Highway at Koliapani when a speeding dumper knocked down four persons who were walking. Two died on the spot while two others including a minor boy have been injured. The deceased were identified as Shiva Kurmi and Madhab Gogoi. The dumper managed to flee from the spot.
