Two back to back earthquakes struck Assam on Wednesday leaving 2 dead in Golaghat besides demolishing several school buildings in the district. The earthquake measuring 5.5 in the Rickhter scale originated at Borpothar along Golaghat-Karbi Anglong district border at 9.48 in the morning. Two persons died in Golaghat district as they were trying to run out of ther homes when the quake started shaking. Apart from this, cracks surfaced in several buildings housing schools. Atleast 5 students injured in Mohurmukh school when a wall collapsed on them during the earthquake. They were rushed to the hospital. The intensity was so massive in the district that the functioning came to a halt at a vital unit of the Numligarh refinary. There are reports of damage of properties in Jorhat and Bokakhat.
Tensions escalated in Manipur’s violence-hit Jiribam district on Sunday night as clashes between security forces and protesters turned deadly, officials reported. A young protester, identified as 21-year-old K. Athouba, was fatally shot amid the chaos. A police official confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine who fired the fatal shot, while protesters allege that a Manipur Police special commando unit was responsible. Two others were reported injured in the incident.
