Media fraternity demonstrates in front of press club

Following the call from the national media fraternity, the city based journalists today demonstrated their resentments against the relentless killing of scribes across India in front of Guwahati Press Club. Organized by the Journalists’ Action Committee Assam, the demonstration was participated by various media body representatives & individual journalists and chanted slogans in support of various demands including a special protection law for media persons on duty. It may be noted that India, recognized as the largest democracy in the globe, remains an unsafe place for working journalists irrespective of the regimes in power at New Delhi or any province capital. The populous country witnesses the murder of around five media persons on average in a year and that is never changed for decades.

The land of Lord Vishnu, Gautam Buddha and Mahatma Bapu has however hardly succeeded in resolving any of those journo-murder cases logically and legally. The year 2017 alone witnessed the killing of eight journalists in nine months, where September was the blackest month losing three working journalists.

The media fraternity observed the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, a lawyer turned journalist turned India’s Father of the Nation, today with the countrywide demonstrations. The city based journalists joined in the mission with their specific demands for justice to over 30 victim journalists in the last three daces in Assam.

The participants included senior journalists Sanjib Phukan, Prakas Mahanta, Nava Thakuria, Sabita Lahkar, Mukul Kalita, Mousamjyoti Baishya, DN Singh, Baldev Pandey, Mukut Roy, Manoj Deka, Niren Mali, Dhaniram Kalita, Mahesh Choudhury, Manisha Kalita along with Manoram Gogoi, Jagadindra Raichoudhury, Anupama Deka, Beauty Barman, Munni Begum, Chandan Das, Diganta Das, Rajib Saikia, Purabi Deka, Abdul Halim, Dipjyoti Sarma, Ranjit Patgiri etc.
