NSUI decries government’s ‘silence’ over Pravish Chanam’s death

The National Students Union of India (NSUI) Manipur state on Friday held a protest demonstration here over the death of Pravish Chanam.

The police and his family are still clueless about the mysterious death of the 22-year-old youth from Imphal. Pravish Chanam died under mysterious circumstances at Noida, Uttar Pradesh on September 14 last. 

Son of Chanam Jugindro of Uripok Achom Leikai in Imphal West, Pravish Chanam was travelling from Hydrabad to Delhi on September 7 to witness a musical concert at Noida. 

After six days his family learnt Pravish Chanam had died, and that the police cremated his body, which was never informed to his family.   Three  cops from Knowledge Park Police Station have so far been placed under suspension over the incident. 

The  police station had claimed Pravish Chanam died on September 9 just after the music programme.

According to the post-mortem report, the youth died hardly an hour after he received first aid at the hospital.  His body was reportedly found at a spot located about 500 m from the hospital with injuries and bruises all over his body.

It was reported that Pravish was taken to the BR Ambedkar Hospital, Gautam Budh Nagar from the concert venue by the organizers after he suddenly felt unwell during the event.

His family members believe there was dereliction of duty on the part of the Knowledge Park Police Station in Greater Noida as the police there failed to inform the matter to the family members. 

His family and the North-East Forum for International Solidarity have demanded that the Government of India order an investigation by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the death of Pravish Chanam. 

Activists of NSUI, Manipur state staged the protest in front of the Congress Bhawan demanding justice for late Pravish Chanam.

 “The government is still unwilling to take any concrete step in connection with the death. The silence maintained by the government has raised a big question,” union president P Bakimchandra Meitei told newsmen on the sidelines of the protest. 

Bakimchandra said injury marks and bruises on his body were testimonies that Pravish Chanam was tortured to death. 

He demanded the Manipur government to take immediate action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

More funds for Manipur highways

3 gang members held with arms and ammunition

Youth commits suicide

A 24-year-old youth reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself inside a hotel room at Babupara on Wednesday. Reports said Konsam Chandrakriti, son of late K Chandrakanta Singh of Ramnagar Tuko of Silchar within Assam’s Cachar district, was found dead inside Hotel Star this morning. He hanged himself with a khudei (clothe) inside his hotel room. Some employees of the hotel informed the police after he did not give any response when they called him from outside the room. The door of the room was found closed from inside. A team of Jiri police arrived there and broke the door open when he was found hanging from the ceiling. The police have started investigation into the death.

3 girls from Manipur rescued in Karnataka

In a suspected case of human trafficking, three young girls from Manipur, who were taken to Karnataka on pretext of providing jobs, were rescued at Shimoga district of Karnataka. The trio were rescued during a joint operation carried out by Karnataka police, Imphal West police and Women Helpline ‘181,’ as per a report. It said the girls will be handed over to their parents with the help of the Social Welfare Department. Women in distress have been appealed to use any time the toll free telephone number 181 of Women Helpline ‘181’ for help. One dies in Imphal East, swine flu suspected

One suspected swine flu (H1N1) death has been reported at a private hospital here on Monday. The patient, hailing from Imphal East, suffered from symptoms similar to that of pandemic swine flu, officials said. The patient died at Rajmedicity, North AOC around 9 am. Girl shot dead by boyfriend

A family is mourning after an 18-year-old girl was shot to death allegedly by her “boyfriend” at Moreh town bordering Myanmar early on Sunday. Mild tremor rocks Manipur

A 3.6 magnitude earthquake jolted Manipur on Sunday triggering the fear of the 2015 like one which caused huge damage to the northeastern state. The earthquake, which originated in Ukhrul district struck the state at around 1.36 AM forced many people to wake up and the panic stricken people in the high rise buildings started coming down to the open space.
