Manipur welcomes Swachhta Hi Bharat Sewa Palan
Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh on Friday kicked off the ‘Swachhta Hi Bharat Sewa Palan’ in Manipur, which will be continued till October 2.
Swachhta Hi Bharat Sewa Palan is being held under the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to mark Gandhi Jayanti which is a national festival celebrated in the country to mark the occasion of the birthday of MK Gandhi.
On the sidelines of the event, the Manipur Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh in a media query stated that all district administrations have been asked to look into the matter concerning candidature of non-locals contesting the forthcoming general Panchayat elections in the state.
Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA) has threatened to ban movement by non-locals in all localities from September 22 till the polling day, that is, October 7, if the non-local candidates contesting in the elections fail to withdraw their candidature by September 20.
The association, which has been spearheading a movement demanding constitutional protection to indigenous people of Manipur, has also demanded that names of all non-locals in the electoral roll of the state should be deleted and debarred them from contesting any election.
“We’re seriously looking into the matter,” Biren Singh further told newsmen.
The Chief Minister pledged to make a clean, healthy and new India at the launch of the Swachhta Hi Sewa at Koirengei organised by the Forest Department.
PHED minister Loshi Dikho, Additional Chief Secretary Shambhu Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest K Avi Angami and several other Forest officials were present on the occasion.

IMPHAL: The Manipur Legislative Assembly has elected Kongkham Robindro Singh as Deputy Speaker by a voice vote in the ingoing budget session on Thursday. The election was conducted in the Assembly Secretariat where Congress candidate Fazur Rahim was defeated in the voice vote. All old petrol and diesel vehicles in the country are set to convert to all-electric vehicles by installing kits by 2020. This was informed to the media by senior scientist Robindro Lairenlakpam from the Indian Institute of Petroleum Council of Scientific and Industrial Research at the Press Club here on Tuesday. He said the plan would be completed by 2020 during which 60-70 lakh old vehicles are to be converted to electric-vehicles. Robindro also informed that this plan is being taken up under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Centre has already declared that India will sell only electric vehicles by 2030.

Drugs worth Rs 3 crore were intercepted here on Saturday by police and arrested a man in connection with the incident. Police said 72,000 pieces of WY tablets and 286 gm of heroin were uncovered from a sand-loaded mini truck around noon. They identified the drug peddler as Nongmaithem Ranjit, 56, son of Dolanjao of Nambol Heikrujam Nongmaithem Leikai within Bishnupur district.
