Lull in rains recedes worsening fear

The rains have relented much to a major respite. But the flood waters have refused to recede putting more and more people in dire trouble.

The overflowing waters of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries still keep wreaking havoc among in 25 district with a toll of 25 during the last four days.

If rains refuse to fall afresh the water level of the major rivers is expected to recede during the next 12 hours. 

There seems to be some respite in the worst-hit Nagaon district where  the water level of the Kolong has shown a receding trend from Thursday morning. 

The situation took a grim turn after the overflowing waters breached a vital dyke in three places in Kaliabor on Tuesday wee hours sending a huge volume of waters to the river Kolong which was in spate following incessant rains. 

“From this morning the water level have shown a receding trend and if this remains uninterrupted within the next couple of hours we would be able to heave a sigh of relief,”said Ranjita Bora, a housewife in Nagaon town. 

Army, NDRF, SDRF jawans are on relief and rescue operations in the affected areas while Indian Air Force has been airdropping relief materials to the marooned people in the remote and inaccessable areas. 

Apart from Nagaon, other worst-hit districts include Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Goal Para, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh where the government has set up as many as 100 relief camps. 

Many organizations and non governmental organizations have also been helping the marooned people shift to the relief camps. These organizations, mostly, have been distributing relief materials among the flood hit people. 

The government has instructed the district authorities to ensure adequate food, medicines and potable water to the camps. Doctors and nurses have been deployed in most of the relief camps. 

Normal surface communication remains cut off in the flood hit areas. Train services in the entire north eastern region remains unmoved for third consecutive day on Thursday. The Northeast Frontier Railway has suspended movement of all trains outside the region till August 20.
