More blow for Matang Sinh

A local court in Agartala on Monday called illegal the closure of a media house without compensating the employees giving a huge relief to a good number of journalists who lost jobs eight years back.

The judgement came out on Monday when West Tripura district and session judge Ruhidas Pal heared the case filed by journalist Prasenjit Chakravartty against North East Multi Media owned by former Union minister Matang Sinh, who is now in jail in the multi crore chit fund scam.

Matang Sinh owned several private satellite television channels like NETV, NE HiFi, NE Bangla, Hmar TV, Focus TV and HyTV though later all the channels got closed one after another.

Veteran Congress leader and minister for PMO in the PV Narsimha Rao govt at the centre Matang Sinh launched his third private satellite television channel NE Bangla in Agartala on 7th August 2007.

SC junks PIL opposes 'indiscriminate' deportations

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday declined to accept a plea by All BTC Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) raising concerns over the state’s “indiscriminate” move to detain and deport suspected foreigners. A Bench of the top court comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma asked ABMSU to move the the Gauhati High Court. In writ petition, the organisation questioned the growing pattern of deportations by the Assam Government through informal “push back” mechanisms, without any judicial oversight or adherence to the safeguards envisaged by the Constitution.
