Today is September 8, 2008. Assam is celebrating the 83rd birth day of music legendary music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika albeit the birthday boy is in Mumbai. Birthday wishes are pouring in for the pride of Assam and Dada Saheb Phalke award winning singer. Several organization on Monday are celebrating the day across the state.
A special screening of a documentary film on the life and works of, produced by Surjya Hazarika was held at the auditorium of the Assam Handloom and Textiles department office on Sunday. The documentary film titled Bihangam Drishtit Dr Bhupen Hazarika throws light on the life and works of the Phalke awardee. Many eventful moments of Dr Hazarika’s life have been covered in the film. The English version if the film titled Dr Bhupen Hazarika: A Living Legend was screened at the St Adrews Hall of London south Gate in July last and won accolades from the viewers.

The Assam Government has announced judicial probe into the Dispur firing clash where 3 persons including a minor boy lost their lives. The announcement came from Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who is expected to receive the Surajeet Mitra’s enquiry report on Monday. According to information, a panel of a retired high court judge would probe the entire incident where a section of KMSS –protesters turned violent as they were holding a rally in Dispur last gate on June 22. Initially, the government asked additional chief secretary Surajeet Mitra to probe the incident which is set to submit the report on Monday.
A bus driver was severely beaten up by some persons, including a brother of Manipur Health Minister, L Jayentakumar at Thangal village in Senapati district on Friday, police said.
The bus driver, Ningthoujam Dhanakumar (40), a resident of Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi, was hit by a tyre lever in the left eye as about five persons, including the brother of Jayentakumar , who were riding in a Bolero exchanged some hot words with him over giving side at Thangal village along NH-39.

Despite heavy presence of security forces Guwahati still remains a deep den of NDFB rebels who might foment trouble at any time to make its presence felt. Police arrested three hardcore NDFB rebels in the city on Saturday. The trio were arrested during an operation launched at Gandhibasti area in the city in the wee hours. One of them is learnt to be Baikunth Narzary. Police interrogation is on. The arrest comes two days after NDFB chairman threatened to pull out of the peace process citing government lack of good will and sincerity.
A high level business delegation from Laos held a crucial round of talks with north eastern business leaders at the NEDFi House in Guwahati on Saturday. Led by chairman of Indian chamber of commerce in Laos Habib Choudhary, the delegation said that they are keen to invest in Assam and other north eastern states. Other members of the delegation include commerce minister, Dr Nam Viyaketh and tourism minister Somphong Mongkhonvilay.
Three activists of proscribed KYKL, including one who was involved in the extortion of a huge amount of money from various fertilizer dealers in Manipur, have been nabbed by Imphal West police in the last two days, police said on Friday.
The arrested cadres of the outfit are identified as Soram Ibohal(46) of Yairipok, Thoubal district, Ningombam Suranjoy Singh(44), a resident of Thangmeiband in Imphal West and Khuraijam Devenkishor(42) of Thangmeiband, Imphal West.
Police said one 9mm pistol along with five live rounds were seized from Suranjoy.
The city based Down Town Hospital in association with Guwahati Press Club has organized a health check-up camp for scribes at press club premises on June 30 (Thursday). Nearly 150 scribes and their closed relatives participated in the day long camp. The tests included blood sugar, lipid profile, diabetic and ECG, where most of the scribes showed satisfactory results. Of course, some of them were identified with high blood pressure and sugar.

Much to a major relief, music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s condition is believed to have improved on Thursday. Dr Hazarika who was not keeping well was admitted to the Kokilaben-Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai is still undergoing treatment. He was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday night when he complained of respiratory problems. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has wished early recovery of the Asom Ratna.
Gauhati High Court on Thursday directed the Assam Government to submit before it the details of case diary and medical reports on KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi by July 6. A division bench of Justice B D Agarwalla issued the directive to Dispur when the court was hearing Akhil Gogoi’s bail petition on Thursday. Gogoi’s counsels told AssamTimes that the court will hear the bail with a special judge as the court will be remaining closed from Saturday.
