Flood situation deteriorates, death toll rises to 31
The overall flood situation in Assam deteriorates day by day as the mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries submerge new areas every day. Meanwhile, the death toll increases horrifyingly.
Till Tuesday 31 people including children and women lost their lives for drowning in flood water in the different parts of the state. Incessant rains in Assam and also in some parts of Arunachal Pradesh for the last couple of days swelled the rivers of both the banks of Brahmaputra causing flood in 20 districts of the state including the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s home constituency Majuli, which was declared as district immediately after the BJP-led regime formed government in the state. The prevailing flood situation of the Lakhimpur and Dheamaji districts including the Gahpur Sub-division is worst than others In the last 48 hours alone three people in the district of Lakhimpur lost their lives as they were swept away by the flood waters. Two people including a young woman too lost their lives in flood in eastern Assam district of Jorhat on Monday, about 380km. away from the state capital city, Guwahati while life-less body a two year old child was recovered in Boko in the Kamrup district.
The devastating flood takes human lives in Golaghat, Goalpara, Sonitpur districts also. The state government’s data revealed that, as of now, three people lost their lives and one couple remained traceless, who were swept away by the flood water in the Sonitpur district. Two people died in Goalpara and Golaghat districts each in the last 48 hours besides other two including a woman lost their lives in Numaligarh. The state government, on the other hand, allegedly, played a role of mute spectator. The flood victims alleged that they were not provided adequate flood relief by the respective district authority. The people of Simulguri locality of Gossaingaon Sub-divisoin, on Monday blocked the NH 31© for somewhile urging flood relief immediately. Similar situation, today, was witnessed in Dhemaji also. More than two hundred flood victims blocked the NH52 demanding food, cloth and water from the authority at the earliest.

In a horrifying development, a poor flood-affected and differently able farmer of Bordowatop locality in Marigaon district committed suicide on Sunday. The farmer, identified as Kamal Nath, reportedly hanged himself in a temporary camp set-up for flood-affected people of the locality. The flood related death climbed up to 50 in Assam as six more people, reportedly, died drowning in flood waters in different parts of the state. The Assam wing of the Students’ Federation of India(SFI) staged symbolic protestat Dighalipukuripar, Guwahati on June 21 against the UGC’s recent decision to hold NET once in a year. The students’ organization rued that if the UGC implements its recent decision regarding the NET then a large number of students would loss chance to appear in the exam. Presently, the UGC holds NET twice in a year. Moreover, the UGC has decided to decrease pass percentage of the NET from present 15% to 6%.
