Meghalaya Congress back on old game
The Congress Party, which has inherited the policy of 'Divide and rule' from the Britishers is back in its full form to break the five party Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) government led by Donkupar Roy. The MPA comprises 15 members of NCP,11 of UDP, two from the Hill State Peoples Democratic Party (HSPDP), one each from BJP and KHNAM and three independents.
Senior United Democratic Party (UDP) leader and Maghalaya Assembly Speaker, Bindo Lanong was recently offered the post of chief minister by the Congress party in case he helped it to form a UDP-Congress coalition government in the state. Lanong exposed the Congress plan to create confusion among the coalition partners and made is clear that it would not succeed in its plan. There was a rumor that the Congress leaders were making efforts to contact UDP and NCP members of Assembly to topple the MPA government and form a coalition with the Congress. The Congress' attempts to bring NCP into its fold failed with P A Sangma recently making it clear that his party was committed to MPA coalition. In its next attempt the Congress was trying to attract UDP legislators by offering cabinet berths, if Congress-UDP coalition government could be formed. In its attempt the Congress even offered the post of chief minister to the Assembly Speaker, who turned down the offer telling that he was not a 'power hungry person'.
Even since the Congress lost power to MPA coalition its leaders were desperately trying to stage a comeback. They are approaching each and every one claiming that being the single largest party they would welcome to form a coalition government with them. The Speaker, Bindo Lanong made it clear that the present MPA coalition partners are aware of Congress' game plan and they could not be allured in any case.
