Manipur positive on GST

Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh today stated that implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Manipur will improve its finance.

He was speaking at the inaugural session of an awareness campaign on GST at the auditorium of Manipur State Film Development Society, Palace Compound here, an official release said.

Implementation of GST will bid farewell to the different indirect taxes that are currently applicable in the country.

Joykumar Singh,  who is also in charge of Finance, said the new tax regime going to be rolled out across the country from July 1 this year will also benefit the state in many ways.

The uniform tax regime will mend the loopholes in tax collection avenues and also cover the tax revenue lapses, he said.

He said GST which is the consumer based tax will benefit the people since it is transparent and many taxes will be absorbed by this tax.

During the 14th GST Council Meeting held at Srinagar on May 18-19,  the Deputy Minister had proposed to keep the handloom sector at 0% tax slab which is the lowest among the five different tax slabs in GST.

However, the Council observed it to be discussed again in its 15th meeting to be held on June 2-3 in New Delhi.

On the indigenous dried fish (ngari), he said the Council decided to impose 5% GST on coastal marine dried fish and therefore the indigenous dried fish may also fall under this tax slab. All farm products will be levied 0% GST, he informed.

The Deputy Chief Minister stressed on the need to extend cooperation from the people in implementation of the new tax regime.

Contraband items worth Rs 12 crore seized

IMPHAL, Mar 14 : In one of the biggest recoveries of contraband items in recent times, troops of 12 Assam Rifles of 26 Sector Assam Rifles apprehended a drug peddler with brown sugar and WY tablets worth approximately Rs 11.96 crore near Tengnoupal on March 13. New migratory birds sighted at Loktak Lake

All old vehicles to be converted to electric vehicles by 2020

All old petrol and diesel vehicles in the country are set to convert to all-electric vehicles by installing kits by 2020. This was informed to the media by senior scientist Robindro Lairenlakpam from the Indian Institute of Petroleum Council of Scientific and Industrial Research at the Press Club here on Tuesday. He said the plan would be completed by 2020 during which 60-70 lakh old vehicles are to be converted to electric-vehicles. Drugs seized in Manipur

 Drugs worth Rs 3 crore were intercepted here on Saturday by police and arrested a man in connection with the incident. Police said 72,000 pieces of WY tablets and 286 gm of heroin were uncovered from a sand-loaded mini truck around noon. They identified the drug peddler as Nongmaithem Ranjit, 56, son of Dolanjao of Nambol Heikrujam Nongmaithem Leikai within Bishnupur district. The drug haul could have fetched more than Rs 3 crore if it had been allowed to hit the streets. One killed, three hurt in hit-and-run accident

IMPHAL, Jan 3 (NENA): One cyclist was mowed down and three others were injured in a hit-and-run car accident last night, hitting one person after another in Imphal East’s Hatta and NRL pump at Khurai.   The deceased identified as Thangjam Paka, 56, resident of Khurai Thangjam Leikai, died near Khurai NRL pump after the Santro car hit and dragged him along the road about 100 ft.
