One of the pioneer art historian & curators of India, Professor Rabin Dev Choudhury asks the youth to study history with interest. Attending the ‘Guest of the Month’ program at Guwahati Press Club on 22 May 2017, Prof Choudhury also pointed out that India is a land of historical treasures and the young generation should know about their past.
The former director general of National Museum disclosed that India is the unique country to maintain its cultural heritage for thousands of years. Presently associated with Indian Art History Congress and Itihas Sankalan Samity, the soft spoken gentleman insisted that the countrymen should be proud of the unbroken heritage of India. Prof Choudhury also emphasized on the serious studies on Pragjyotishpur and Kamrup.
Born at Patacharkuchi locality in western Assam on 1 May 1944, Prof Choudhury completed his primary education at his home place and later completed his graduation from Cotton College in Guwahati. He obtained MA from Sagar University of Madhya Pradesh and PhD from Pune University.
Besides the national museum, he served National Institute of History of Art, Conservation and Museology, Tezpur University, Assam State Museum etc. Some of his valuable creations include ‘Archaeology of the Brahmaputra Valley of Assam’, ‘Art Heritage of Assam’, ‘Museums of northeast India’, ‘A Source book of the numismatic studies in northeast India’, ‘Art history of Tripura’, ‘The hand-book of Assam State Museum’ etc.
